Bobcat Bulletin

Week of August 16th

From the Desk of Principal Schmid

Hello Bobcat Community,

We are looking forward to welcoming our Bobcats back to school this week! If you are new to Brookdale and missed the first two newsletters, they can be found here: Summer Update/Week of August 9th.

We are very excited about our upcoming events this week and hope these can be memorable experiences for both you and your student(s). We know we missed getting to host these events last year and are very glad to have our community back in our building this year! Our Bobcat Family is not complete without each of you!

Please let us know if you have any questions regarding any of items within this newsletter. We know there is a lot of information, but this is an effort to put it all in one place for you as we begin the year. We are here to support you as we transition back to school as we know for some of our students this is the first time back in over a year and a half! We are starting the year in-person, and that is something we are ALL grateful for!

We look forward to seeing you very soon!

Brookdale's Proud Principal,

Mrs. Keeley Schmid

Bobcat Dream Team: Fully Staffed!

We are officially fully staffed pending some tentative approvals! Take a look at the Dream Team roster for this coming school year. Thank you to Mrs. Stepper and our teacher interview team (Mrs. Bramstedt, Mrs. Schmidt, Mrs. Walsh, and Mr. Rust) who helped in the hiring process for the 2021-2022 school year! We take hiring very seriously as we ensure the best are put with your children each day! We will introduce them in the upcoming Bulletins, so you can get to know some of the new faces in the family!

Your Child's Schedule

You should receive a schedule from your child's teacher by Wednesday, August 18th at 4:00pm. The classroom schedule will give you information on what your child's day looks like throughout the week. More information will be shared through our virtual Curriculum Night with our follow-up Zoom Q & A with the teacher on September 1st (6:00-7:30). More details on Curriculum Night to come.

General Drop-Off/Pick-Up Procedures

We have approximately 500 students enrolled at Brookdale Elementary for this school year! It is important we get all kids into the school safely and home safely and appreciate your help. A special shout out to our amazing Brookdale Safety Patrol, our 5th grade leaders (can be seen with orange vests), who offer a great deal of support in this effort!

Please ensure your child and child's teacher knows his/her arrival/dismissal plan. Any change of dismissal plans on the day of should be communicated to the office (630-428-6800) prior to 2:30pm.

All students will enter and exit through the same door based on grade level or arrival/dismissal plan (see linked map above).

August 19th: On the first day of school, we will have all students line up on the blacktop/field as we kick-off the year together! Teachers will have signs, so you can find your child's teacher. We will begin our second day (August 20th) in our normal routine, including our kindergartners entering Door 11.

Students can arrive at 8:50am daily. Staff will not be on supervision prior to 8:50am. At 8:50am doors will open and students will head to their classroom. Staff will be on hand to guide students to their classrooms. Doors will close at 9:05am and students will need to enter at Door 1 (main entrance) to be signed-in. Being on time for school helps your child get started in his/her routine.

*Kindergarten Parents: Please pay special attention to the kindergarten arrival/dismissal door on the map above (front of school). Parents should come to door 11 if picking up their kindergartner as a walker. All remaining kindergarten students will be escorted and supervised at the car line.

See below for details depending on how your child arrives and leaves school.

Is Your Student a Car Rider?

If dropping-off/picking-up by car, our community should follow the car rider visual map. If you are coming from Redfield Road, the line wraps onto Bainbridge, so you will want to join the line by turning onto Bainbridge (see visual). The car line will not begin unloading until 8:50am when supervision is present.

Kindergarten students will again be using the car line this year. Extra supervision has been assigned to accommodate our littlest learners.

Please ensure you pull all the way up on Redfield when instructed by staff. All cars will stop, students unload on the curb side, and the process continues.

Below is a video recorded, to help provide a visual for the car line procedures. It is important we all do our part to keep all students safe (this includes adhering to the school zone speed limits, please!).

Is Your Student a Walker?

Please remember supervision is not on duty until 8:50am. Please plan your child's walk accordingly.

If you are parking and walking to school using one of the side streets, please follow street signs and pay attention to curb markings.

There will be three crossing guards on duty:

1. Across from the school on Redfield at the crosswalk

2. At the intersection of Bainbridge and Redfield

3. At the path to the school on Bainbridge

Will Your Child be Taking the Bus?

Transportation is available to our students who live more than 1.5 miles from school. If you are eligible, you can now see your transportation details in ParentVUE. Instructions can be found here. Students who ride the bus will enter and exit out of Door 2 (Safety Patrol will escort kindergarten students). We will escort all bus riders to the blacktop for our first day on 8/19.

*Same procedure is followed for our students who take a daycare bus to/from school.

Safe and Sound Program

If your child is enrolled in the YMCA's Safe and Sound Program, your child, once dismissed, will join the Safe and Sound program in the MPR (cafeteria).

Following District 204's 2021-22 Plan, the self-certification will be conducted monthly via ParentVUE while we are in the orange, substantial submission level. You should plan to self-certify your child prior to the first day of school for the month of August. Those that were with us on the self-certification journey last year, I am sure we can all do a silent cheer to the end of daily self-certification!

Lunch is free for all students and will continue to be grab and go as they were last year with three daily options this year and one breakfast option (included in the lunch for the next day morning at home). All will be prepackaged and continue to meet USDA requirements. A menu can be found here.

Students will be eating on in our multi-purpose room (cafeteria) at the lunch tables spread apart by 3 feet and on the stage (in desks) 3 feet apart from head to head. Students will sit with their class and have a seating chart alphabetically for the start of the year (seating chart required for contact tracing). The seating chart will be revisited as the year progresses. Masks do not have to be worn outside when the students are participating in recess (the same applies to P.E.). The playground is also now OPEN for kids to play (hooray!). We are starting off with open recess as we had done pre-pandemic and will revisit zone recess as a grade level to grade level decision if needed.

For hand washing hygiene, we will keep the same order of lunch first then recess for each grade level (schedule below). Similar to last year, only our grade levels that go four hours or more from the start or end of school will be taking a snack time (2nd grade and Kindergarten).

Below is our lunch schedule:
