Library News!
Emerson Librarian Ms. Vetter made surprise visits to Ms. Galvin's class and Mr. Limata's class this week. Look for her to start visiting every class in the next couple of weeks.
Ms. Vetter encourages everyone to use the Oakland Public Library, which offers:
- e-books that you can read on any device at home
- curbside pickup of library materials: books, DVDs, and CDs.
The Oakland Public Library website has updated information about which branches offer curbside pickup service and on what days and times.
If you don't have a library card, no problem! You can apply for library cards online, and get help if you've forgotten your library card number and/or PIN. (The plastic card itself isn't necessary.) Each member of the family can have their own card -- even babies! But there is a maximum of 15 physical items per card, so it makes sense to get cards for every member of the family.
FREE BOOKS!
Celia is giving away free books and prizes between 1:00 and 4:00 tomorrow (Saturday) in front of the Temescal Branch Library at 5205 Telegraph Avenue. Wear a mask and point out (from a safe distance) which book you want to take home! Check here before you go to make sure the event hasn't been cancelled due to smoky air.
Celia Jackson, the new Children's Librarian at the Temescal Branch of the Oakland Public Library, is eager to support the Emerson community. She can help you get new library cards, renew old ones, learn how to use library services, and she can even put together a customized book bundle of picture books or early readers for you! You can e-mail her at cjackson@oaklandlibrary.org any time, or you can try calling her at 510-597-5049 when she's at the branch, which is currently 9-2:30 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Enrollment Count!
- Our enrollment is at 332 students. We dropped a bit this week.
- We were projected at 340, 8 students short of 340.
- If you know families in the lower grade (TK, Kinder or 1st Grade) that are looking for options, we have a few spaces available. Thank you everyone.
Attendance/Engagement: Keep it up Emerson!
Staying Engaged with Distance Learning:
- Remember - students should be at EVERY Morning ZOOM Meeting
- AND Logging into Clever Everyday to access the Learning Plans.
- All students will be engaged in assessment next week, with teachers.
Vision
Mission
We are a relationship-centered school:
students are known, valued and celebrated.
We support all students:
academic and social emotional programs meet students where they are and accelerate them forward.
We are committed to equity:
we eliminate racial, socioeconomic and gender inequities through culturally relevant learning experiences.
We are a learning community:
with a learning stance, we use inquiry and reflection to improve our practice.
Food Distribution Changes!
Now serving only students enrolled in OUSD
- Bring the letter mailed by Nutrition Services this week, that explains the changes and includes your child’s ID# and a scannable barcode.
- Bring your child’s student ID card with their Aeries ID# from the previous year (and ideally have a barcode in order to be scanned)
- Wait in a separate line and have your child’s information looked up in a district database at the food distribution site (this could be a slow process and we highly recommend families bring a copy of their letter).
Families can pick up food at any of the 22 meal service sites. Monday and Thursday 8am-1pm
Back to School Night
- TK-2nd Grade - September 9th, 5:30-6:30pm
- 3rd-5th Grade - September 10th, 5:30-6:30pm
