There is NO SCHOOL for students on Monday, January 23 (teacher work day). Semester 2 Schedules start Tuesday, January 24.
High School Grading FAQ
1. How are grades calculated?
- Term 1 grades = 43%, Term 2 grades = 43%, Final Exam grades = 14%. These make up the official semester grade for the course.
2. What is GPA and how is it calculated?
- Grades have points attached which are used to calculate the Grade Point Average, or GPA. An A is worth 4.0 points, a B is worth 3.0, and so on.
- We do look at the single term GPA. Term grades are used on their own, one term at a time, to calculate honor and merit roll records. We will publish those lists in the next newsletter. Merit Roll = 3.0-3.79 GPA, Honor Roll = 3.8-4.0 GPA. Term GPAs are only ever seen on the report card. They do not appear on the transcript.
- The CUMULATIVE Grade Point Average (GPA) is different from the isolated term GPAs we use for honor roll. It ONLY uses the Semester grade.
- The cumulative GPA recalculates after each semester grade becomes published.
- The cumulative GPA is used for class rank at graduation and may be important for some scholarships or postsecondary schools.
3. What is the difference between a report card and a transcript?
- The report card is issued at the end of each quarter. It shows the grades only for the current school year. Term 1 + Term 2 + S1 Final Exam = Semester 1 Grade. We send report cards home with students after each term.
- The TRANSCRIPT is the official record that will follow students through and beyond high school. This report builds each year and ONLY includes the semester grades. You will not see term or final exam grades on a transcript.
- The transcript also shows their cumulative GPA and class rank.
4. How do grades impact MSHSL eligibility?
- Any Term grade that is an F or NC (No Credit) on a report card makes a student ineligible to compete. They can still rehearse/practice.
- They remain ineligible until the next grade check date. For students with Term 2 Fs, that check in date is February 10, 2023. The student must have no F’s and no administrative “U” in conduct on that day to gain eligibility. This is the date, we will not check again until the end of the term. If they have any F's they are ineligible until Term 3 report cards are published.
For consecutive grade period violations (ie. Term 1 F and Term 2 F), a student is ineligible to participate until the issuance of the next report card (in this case, Term 3).
An “I” is considered a failing grade. If the “I” is changed to a passing grade, the student may gain eligibility.
Students must also be making sufficient credit progress to remain eligible.See your full team handbook for details.
Waivers are only considered in extreme circumstances such as hospitalization, death in immediate family, etc.
Yearbooks are now $95 and will only be sold until January 27. Parent ads are due by January 30.
Sweetheart is February 4!
- This year's theme is Masquerade Ball. (Masks may only be worn for photo ops, not at check in or during the dance.)
- The dance will be held at the Duluth Depot from 8:30-11 pm.
- Ticket Sales are online and during lunches and will open on Tuesday, January 4. A mask is included or you can purchase your own.
- This is a formal dance. If you need help with this please let your counselor or case manager know.
- Only current East 11th and 12th graders may purchase tickets. They may bring a guest in grades 10- age 20. **Even current East 10th graders must have a visitor form as the parent/guardian is agreeing to allow them to come to an event for older students.
- VISITOR FORMS ARE DUE TO THE EAST OFFICE BY 1/30. NO EXCEPTIONS.
- If you or a guest you brought have been removed from a dance in the last 6 months you may not attend this one.

Parking, Drop Off, and Pick Up Reminders
I feel a little like a broken record, and if you're taking the time to read this you probably read it before and are already following our procedures, so thank you!
We struggle with parking and traffic issues even more in the winter. The rules, laws, and expectations still apply! Our neighbors are frustrated and upset and we'd like to help if we can.
The building closes to students at 3:45 each day. Unless they are with an advisor, coach, or teacher, all students are moved into the foyer area to wait for their ride. While we would love to be open to students after hours, we are not staffed to safely supervise them.
Some helpful tips, particularly with pick up after school when the area around East can be very unsafe: Arrange for your student to meet you a couple of blocks away if you can find a safe spot to wait. Another option is to wait until 3:45 if you can; traffic is easing up by then and the buses are typically gone, which opens up Greyhound Drive, too.
Even if you think you can do it quickly, you may not stop in front of the school for drop off.
It results in backups on the road, the driveway lanes being used for wrong-way traffic, and a whole lot of blind spots, frustration, and anger for those trying to get in and out.
No stopping to wait in front of the school along the sidewalk, in the turn lane on 40th, or around the flagpole and fire hydrant.
DROP OFF and PICK UP Reminders
1. NEVER stop in the turn lane or the fire lane in front of the school. This creates incredibly dangerous situations for our school community.
2. In the morning, drop off by pulling all the way into the main lot or by stopping on Greyhound Drive. Doors 4 and 5 on Greyhound Drive are open in the morning.
3. Pick up after school is equally chaotic. Again - DO NOT STOP in front of the school or in the turn lane on 40th.
4. Do not pull into the staff lot for pick up unless you are waiting in an empty parking spot.
5. If you are picking up a student after school, please pull into a parking spot in the main lot to wait. Do not stop in the driving lanes, which includes the lanes around the flagpole/fire hydrant area.
Student Parking Reminders
1. Students MAY NOT park on Greyhound Drive or in the Stadium Lot, EVER.
2. Students may NEVER park in a visitor spot or a spot marked for any other staff member or purpose.
3. Cars that aren't in officially marked parking spots (BETWEEN TWO LINES) will be ticketed and may be towed. Do not block driving lanes!
We will continue to tow frequent offenders and any vehicles parked in driving lanes blocking traffic.
Stay safe, Greyhounds! Despite these reminders and pleas, we will have MANY who do not follow these instructions. Use caution as you approach the school area and as you walk in and out! The area around East can be dangerous from about 8:45-9:00 A.M. and is extremely congested between 3:20 and 3:45 P.M.
Celebrating Live Unified Day!
Students were invited to come to our Unified PE class on Wednesday during 2nd hour or WIN to see what the class is like. We had a fantastic time! The superintendent, special education director, school board members, the press, and even the mayor were here to visit us that day!
We do have limited space in our second semester Unified PE course. Students who are interested should request a meeting with their counselor to request a change if approved.
