The Problem
Avigail S
The Virunga Mountain gorillas are being killed and are on the verge of going extinct.
Mountain gorillas are losing their habitats to humans. Humans are taking wood and materials from the forests. Humans are also poaching the gorillas for trade and money. Although it isn’t as common anymore, people still do it. Another way humans have been killing the gorillas is from illnesses. Illnesses such as ebola can get to the gorillas and harm them. If humans keep their distances from the gorillas and leave them alone then there might be more of them left.
Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund: Gorillas need your help!
This video is about how we can help save the animals and how some people are one step ahead.
The Consequences
This problem of Gorillas going extinct is becoming much bigger. The gorillas are going extinct and this affects the food chain. This is bad because the gorillas are so big that they eat so much. If they do not eat the animals they are supposed to then the animals below them on the food chain will over populate. Even the plants count, if they do not eat the plants then they will grow and grow. The animals above them will starve and go extinct also. If these animals stay, so will all of the other animals and our lives will stay the same.
Silver Back
A silver back is the head of the family. A silver back is a male gorilla. They got their name from the silver hair on their backs.
Female gorillas
A female gorilla is not the leader of the family. She is in charge of taking care of all the children.
New Borns
Baby gorillas are under their parents rules until they are around 9 to 11 years old. After that they are off to make a new family.
The Solutions
Humans can help save the gorillas from going extinct. Humans are starting to realize that they need to help the gorillas. Some on the other hand are not. There are many ways that you can help. You can adopt an animal or donate money to foundations. All help will be needed to help save these animals. Now think, if humans were not even close to the gorillas they wouldn’t be going away so quickly. The least that you can do is be a voice stand up for these animals and save them. Be a voice for the gorillas.
Where The Problem Is Happening
The Virunga mountains are in these three countries; The Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. There recently was a war in these three countries and more. The battle field was part of the Virunga mountains.
Dian Fossey
Dian Fossey studied the mountain gorillas. She convinced to people who live near the gorillas that they need to be left alone. A few years later she was murdered in her cabin. Ever since that day The gorilla population is getting lower and lower.
The Virunga mountains.
The Virunga Mountains are a beautiful place for the gorillas. Some people want to change this to an oil exploration. This is not fair because all the gorillas want to do is have a nice peaceful place to live in. They can not do this if everyone is trying to take over this piece of land.
The Change
We can help find a better habitat for the mountain gorillas living in the Virunga mountains. The gorillas can not live in the mountains any more because it is becoming unsafe for them to live in. There recently was a war there and all of the damage has left them with almost nothing. The Virunga mountains contain a lot of good trees. This is a problem because the people in the village near it come to the forests in the mountains and get the wood. They cut down trees and use other materials from the mountains. If we find a place for us to find these materials then these animals will be happy and safe.
