WHB Weekly Wonderings
Volume 1 * Issue 8 * September 9, 2019
Week 4's Focus
In last week's PLCs we discussed planning with focus (target skill and how to check for mastery) and layering intentional activities within stations accordingly.
When Dr. Barbee and I come to conduct walkthroughs, we will be looking for those target skills and how you check for mastery. This may be through observation and anecdotal notes, serve & return conversation between adult and student, and/or through a student-created product.
Target skills as planned:
PK3
- Move objects according to verbally given positional words
- Count number of words in morning message
- Recognize letters in own name
- Use big voice to self advocate for needs
PK4 | HS
- Identify the five senses and functions of body parts
- Identify letters in own name
- Recognize if words rhyme or not
- Name attributes of objects and sort accordingly
- Listen to story and recall main events
This week in PLCs we will continue to plan and go further by agreeing on exemplars for each target skill. Then following week we will bring student products to PLC to discuss.

WHB Attendance
Weekly attendance by clusters:
PK 3 AM: 94.7% (3rd place)

PK 4: 97% (1st place). Congratulations!

Our Space Race for attendance began last week. The bulletin board has been updated accordingly.

When transitioning in the hallway, be sure you and your class talk about where your space ship is, what your goal is, and how you can get there.
New Information:
Planning Dimension
THIS WEEK we are looking for
- posted objectives that are aligned to the guidelines (1.1 & 2.2),
- activities that are relevant to students and their learning (1.1 & 2.5),
- a check for mastery with feedback provided (1.2 & 2.1),
- connections to students' prior knowledge (1.3 & 2.4), and
- questioning that encourages higher thinking (1.4 & 2.3).
These are the same five bullet points; however, I have added the other dimensions from the instruction domain that coincide with the planning dimensions.
This allows you to see how these dimensions easily layer in your planning.
Lesson Plan Examples
Student will sort using a T-chart
Student will recall five senses

Curriculum Supports
This week's weekly poem/song:
This week include this poem/song in your message to parents. Encourage students to read or sing this text every night this week. They can find the high frequency words "we" and "see" throughout the text.
Suggested ideas:
Monday, parent and student read the words like a poem together (choral reading).
Tuesday, family members sing the song together (choral singing).
Wednesday, student echo reads after the parent.
Thursday, student reads aloud while parent whisper reads.
Friday, student reads and claps when stating a high frequency word (we | see).
Saturday, parent asks student to identify the color word.
Sunday, student draws a picture of what the text means to them.
Literacy Focus: M, W, F mornings (7:30 - 8:00am)
Repeating last week's same videos . . .
Math and Science Focus: T & Th Mornings (7:30-8:00am)
You have editing rights so that you may add other videos/supports for Tuesday and Thursday morning features.
Updated Information:
Family Style Eating
This last week's focus was for students to be able to . . .
- Conversation about the types of food presented: protein, vegetable, fruit, bread or grain.
- Discuss the attributes of the foods: juicy, soft, crunchy, cold, warm, etc.
- Compare and contrast the types of food.
- Talk about hygiene at the table. EX: Turn your head and cover your mouth with elbow when coughing and sneezing. Don't touch food in bowls/containers; use the provided utensils.
- Try to have students pass one bowl of the easiest food presented each day. Bowl stays on table. Student uses tongs or scoop without touching other food in container.
This week, students will do as previously expected and add...
- We have to start allowing students to self serve some foods. You may choose to allow them to scoop and serve their second serving.
- As previously stated, allow students to pass the sealed/packaged items such as this past week's chips and sandwiches.
If you have any needs regarding not enough food/milk, timeliness of carts being ready, etc. please contact our cafeteria manager, Kim Crouch (Kim.crouch@terrellisd.org).
