Key Reminders and Messages for Each Year
Year 7
- Making sure the RESPECT mnemonic is stuck into the book
- Making sure students are aware of the presentation standards of their books- this is vital in light of 'progress over time' measures now!
- Use the big picture slide each lesson!
- Now we are beginning to mark and feedback as the term is underway- please refer to the Dixons Standards in books
- PLEASE NOTE THE SCHEME HAS BEEN READJUSTED! YOU CAN RUN THIS OVER TWO WEEKS IN LIGHT OF THE BRIDGE TRAINING AND READING TESTS
THIS WEEK:
This week, students are stepping into a character's shoes from your class reader and describing using a range of techniques, such as-
WOW words
Senses
Sentence Openers
Punctuation
Simile
Metaphor
Personification
THINGS TO TRY:
- Pupils to draw around their hand- label each finger with a sense and the palm with feelings- watch a video clip and ask them to assume a character's role noting down ideas to describe it
- Use stations to circulate and build ideas- this is one I did for Macbeth, for example
- Use the grade descriptors to peer assess and assess examples that you create
- Set up a range of 'inspiration stations' around the room for students to move and get ideas from- perhaps one student per table can go and get information to bring back to build a descriptive pice of writing
- Use any of ASA's GCSE descriptive writing scheme here
Year 8-
- Making sure the RESPECT mnemonic is stuck into the book
- Making sure students are aware of the presentation standards of their books- this is vital in light of 'progress over time' measures now!
- Use the big picture slide each lesson!
- Ideas:
- Character timeline
- Introduction to themes? This is a long video but quite good if you cut it short- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4qME64SkxM
- Character twitter feed or fake facebook page
- Character graphs plotted with graphs
Year 9
- Making sure the RESPECT mnemonic is stuck into the book

- You should be moving onto Macbeth now. See ASA introductory lesson if it's helpful- more descriptive than analytical to begin with. Let me know if you need anything.
