My Journey from Mobility to Prevention
As a young physical therapist, I gravitated to the children who could not talk or move. I sought the latest training (NDT 8-week course and MOVE). I scoured the literature for evidence, spending many hours at the NIH and National Medical Libraries (this was before the internet!) As new approaches were presented, I visited their preachers and spoke with families and children who were partaking in these therapies (HBO, CE, TAMO. MEDEK, Adelisuit, Chailey, Vojta, Anat Banal, Patterning,
etc.) Each time, I tried to collect some data and draw conclusions. By 1994, I submitted my first abstract to a national conference (AACPDM).
What I learned was that when children were active and participating, this fun translated to function. When children began to move, they became healthier. Now that I have a doctorate and have learned more about evaluating research and publishing, I can begin to connect the dots between mobility and prevention. When children are supported to sit and play with their hands, bear weight, step and explore their environment at the same age as typical children, muscle and bone respond in positive ways. We now have specific interventions to improve reach, grasp, hips, spine, range of motion, spasticity, vision, etc. At the root of all of these interventions is active mobility without long periods of immobility. This session will share stories of discovery that intertwines case presentations and evidence to leave the participant excited to be a pediatric therapist. Your core beliefs and thirst for evidence will be strengthened. Join Ginny Paleg in laughter and tears as we learn about her journey from mobility to prevention.
