EMS Eagles Newsletter #6
Evangeline Middle School September 28, 2020
Where we live
You only have to experience a weekend like this past one to be reminded of what a wonderful nook of the Province that we live in! Driving through many of our local communities this beautiful Fall weekend you realize how many people from other parts of our province believe this too as they came to experience all that the Valley has to offer at harvest time! It reminds us that we have much to be thankful for.... even in these Covid times.
We are thankful also for the beautiful Fall weather as many classes are taking opportunities conduct their classes outdoors. It looks like the week ahead will be sandwiched with sunshine on Monday and Friday but Nova Scotia weather can change in an instant!
We hope that you are hearing from your student that he/she is settling well into this new normal. Our school routines are beginning to fall into a pattern. As always, please contact the office with any questions that you may have and if there is anything we can do to help your child, please let us know. We look forward to another positive LAST WEEK of September!,
We are #EagleStrong.

September 30th is Orange Shirt Day, is a day when we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and learn more about the history of those schools. It is also an opportunity for schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.
Terry Fox Fundraiser Update
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope. Evangeline Middle School has held a walk every year since it opened. This year, homeroom teachers will organize their own walks with their class to commemorate this event.
In honor of the 40th anniversary, each class has set a goal of collecting at least $40 (approximately $2.00 per student). Donations will be accepted by homeroom teachers at morning attendance. If you are writing a cheque, please make it out to EMS and Terry Fox on the memo line. All donations are welcome, tax receipts will be issued for donations of $20 or more.

Nourish Your Roots Fundraiser
Hello EMS Families,
EMS's Nourish Your Roots (NYR) fundraising program is underway! NYR has moved out of schools and into the community this year. The boxes will now be distributed through community partners with no direct involvement from schools due to COVID-19. The 116 schools who originally signed up for Nourish Your Roots will still receive much-needed funds for their healthy food programs such as breakfast, food literacy in the classroom and food gardens.
It has never been easier to buy a box:
1. Visit the online store
2. Select your pick-up location and date
3. Choose to support Evangeline Middle School (EMS) with your purchase
4. Pay for your order
Dedicated farm partners have been working hard to prepare for deliveries starting on September 28th and running through to the end of October. Boxes are $35, have a variety of farm-fresh local produce, and will be available for pick-up at 32 community sites around the province. The pick-up location for our school would be::
Greenwich - Noggins Corner Farm
The funds raised through your purchase of a NYR box will be used to support Evangeline Middle School’s healthy food initiatives, such as Breakfast Program, Healthy Snacks, Farm to School Initiatives, and more.
Please visit the NYR online store for more information and details on ordering your box today.

UNEXPECTED Early DISMISSAL (due to impending weather etc.)
In case of unexpected early dismissal (due to impending weather etc.):
1. An Alert will be sent to you from EMS and/or AVRCE via text msg and email (make sure your contact info is kept up-to-date with the school).
2. Your student will be dismissed as usual; if they normally take the bus, they will take the bus; if they normally walk or are picked up, this will be the expected protocol.
A reminder to please have a conversation with your student about how this looks for them if there is an early dismissal, so they know what is expected (i.e. what to do if they go home and no one is home), etc.
If you have additional or exceptional information regarding dismissal of your Middle School child in grade 7 or 8; please contact the office. If your child is in grade 6, this information will be coming home on a form shortly.
