A MESSAGE FROM MR. LUCITA

Dear Jaguar Band Families,

I first want to say how awesome it was to have all of the students together last week for the first time! The students did an incredible job of following guidelines where distance, masks and procedures were concerned! I would like remind everyone that practice starts at 5 p.m. and request that everyone plan ahead for traffic, COVID screening and any of the other items that may cause a delay. There were several cars arriving after rehearsal had started. We will do our best to keep the line moving as students exit and are checked according to the screening process as they arrive. Our goal is to start rehearsal right at 5 p.m. and dismiss at 8 p.m. Other than that one small hiccup, I can say that the first rehearsal was absolutely awesome! It was so great to have everyone together making music for the first time as the Jaguar Band. All of the students I spoke to felt the exact same way and there were smiling eyes everywhere!!

This week we have two rehearsals. Monday & Thursday 5 - 8 p.m. We will follow the exact same procedures as last week concerning the screening process and students going straight to the practice field. Guard will report to the gym. Percussion and Tubas will get their equipment from the band-hall the same way as well.

I do encourage everyone to check the weather before rehearsals and dress accordingly! Last week caught several students off guard with just how cool it was as the sun set! I loved the change, but it did get a little chilly. Just for future reference if the weather mandates wearing a jacket, that is perfectly fine we want our students to be warm and able to function comfortably. However, if the weather allows we want everyone wearing the same items we did for summer band; shorts, athletic shoes and a white t-shirt! (plus masks and bell covers)

We ordered our show shirts and shorts last week for winds, percussion and guard. For wind and percussion players, if you did not complete the posted google form and provide us with your sizes, we ordered based upon last years sizes or our best estimation of what size that student would wear. Also, all students should have their flip folder, pages and music at this point and bring them to rehearsal. We do have extra flip folder pages should anyone need them. Please see a director before or after practice. They are $0.25 each.

Masterclasses will continue and will focus on the Texas All State Music. All Wind Ensemble students and any others that are interested in auditioning for District, Region, Area and All State should be in attendance for your instruments masterclass!

Regular band classes continue via Zoom! Everyone did a great job with their first week of Zoom Band! Please make sure that every student has access to a metronome that is not on the same device as the meeting. This is because each student will lead part of the class, perform a musical selection individually and must have an audible metronome to avoid a sound delay from the zoom audio. We also ask that everyone please have your music, instrument and pencil ready when the class starts; complete your SmartMusic assignments; complete your Schoology items; and, most of all, let’s enjoy making music!

Our first football game will be here soon (check band calendar for all band events). Before we get to game week, everyone will be receiving a detailed letter of how we will approach the entire process from meals, buses, instruments, entering the stadium, seating, performing, exiting, and much more!! Please read those items carefully when they arrive and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

We will be taking band photos for the 2020-2021 season! These photos will be for band pages in the Johnson HS yearbook, for band recruiting posters, for individual purchase, and various other opportunities to promote and support our Jaguar Band! Be on the lookout for more information coming very soon!

As I stated in the beginning, last weeks full band rehearsal was awesome! I can’t wait to see everyone Monday and Thursday of this week as we continue to build this years show JOHNSON: This Is Us!

Have a great week,

Mr. Lucita

PICTURE DAY! Saturday, 9/19

In order to provide families will the opportunity to have their students photo taken in full uniform, the Band Boosters will be facilitating a picture day on Saturday, 9/19.

All wind, percussion, and guard families will receive an email later this evening with the details and a signup genius link to sign-up for time slots. (*Most time slots will take place after the Jag Jog).

Families of returning wind and percussion students will be given the option in the sign-up to use last year's photo. Any new student who does not sign up for picture day will not have his/her photo included in the football program, athletic poster, or yearbook.

Families of virtual learning band/guard students who are currently not participating in marching band are welcome to sign up and get your students picture done!

The email you will receive will contain our COVID safety protocols and details regarding the plan for picture day. Please know that we only take individual photos. Our photographer uses these photos to make a group picture. We will not be putting the students in a group for pictures!

What you need to know NOW:

  • EVERY student MUST wear compression clothing (or any tight clothing – i.e. leggings, sports/bike shorts, NO LOOSE SHIRTS or SHORTS) to change in and out of uniform.
  • COLOR GUARD will need to wear solid black leggings. (jeans, shorts will not be allowed) Length of leggings does not matter as lower legs and feet will NOT be seen in the picture.

*We know that this is late notice but we ask that you first read the email we will send later this evening and then we ask for your grace as pictures in full band uniform would not be happening this year if not for this plan hosted by your Band Boosters (with support from our directors, of course).

If you have any questions, please contact Ida Musgrove at president@johnsonbands.com
