Read Across America Day (March 2)
March 2 is National Read Across America Day! The day was established the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. The day occurs each year on the birthday of beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss, so a perfect way to celebrate is to don a Seussian hat and read one of his famous tales. It's also a wonderful day to celebrate the diverse country we have by reading books that highlight the various regions of the United States. On National Read Across America Day, students, teachers, parents, and community members around the nation come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading — join us!

Read Across America day is a great day for your child to contribute minutes for their grade level. If your child extends his/her reading at home on March 2, we can count those minutes towards our Independent Readathon. Please record your students independent reading minutes here: Link to Indenpendent Readathon minutes
Boulder Hill has a big HEART
Our 2023 Kids Heart Challenge was a great success. 46 Boulder Hill students participated by registering online, with 22 students raising a total of $2,910.15 for the American Heart Association. This year’s top fundraiser is Roman, who is a Boulder Hill kindergarten student. CONGRATULATIONS ROMAN!! You raised $855. 95 for Kids Heart Challenge!! Students from 18 classrooms participated.
Mrs. Guzman’s 2nd grade class had the most students registered AND the most learning Hands-Only CPR! Way to go Mrs. Guzman’s class!!
Thank you Boulder Hill families and friends for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Mr. Baresel & Mrs. Vlach
Boulder Hill PE teachers
Thank you to all of the students and families for their participation. We would like to thank our PE teacher Mr. Baresel & Mrs. Vlach for coordinating this successful event.
We do good work! Good work feels good!
State Assessments information for you to know.
As we are in the season of assessing student learning, we've received questions from some members of our Boulder Hill family.
According to federal law:
- Students must take an achievement exam in reading/language arts and mathematics each year from third through eighth grade.
- In Illinois, students take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness.
- Students must take an achievement exam in science three times from third through 12th grade. In Illinois, students take the Illinois Science Assessment in fifth, eighth, and 11th grades.
- Students identified as English learners must take an English language proficiency exam once per year until English proficiency is reached. In Illinois, English learners take ACCESS.
- Students with the most significant cognitive disabilities must take alternate assessments in reading/language arts, mathematics, and science. In Illinois, students with significant cognitive disabilities take the Dynamic Learning Maps Alternate Assessment.
We encourage students to do their best on all assessments. Individual districts and schools may have local policies for students who refuse to take assessments on testing days, but federal and state law does not authorize districts or schools to excuse students from testing. ISBE does not provide guidance on “opting out” because such an option would violate the law.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the ISBE Assessment Department at 866-317-6034 or visit the ISBE Assessment webpage.

Help show a Boulder Hill staff member how much you appreciate all they do!
Pass It On is a way to send a shout-out or thank you to any SD 308 staff member. Every day there are staff members doing great things for students, co-workers, parents, and our community. Let’s recognize these acts of kindness, big or small!
With the Pass It On system, you can take a few seconds to submit a note of recognition to someone in the SD 308 family. These notes will be sent to the recipient once a week. Notes can be sent from an individual, team, or anonymously.
Kindness is contagious, so we encourage you to Pass It On!
A little show of appreciation can go a long way!

Community Chat: Taking Care of Yourself February 21 (virtual 6PM - 7:30PM)
These CHATS are virtually held and are an opportunity to share stories, experiences, worries, fears, wisdom, and find community and strength together.
CHATS are a safe space to begin opening the lines of communication.
