MESSAGE FROM MRS. FURMAN
This week was our first week going mask optional. Please remember either way it's ok!
With the warmer weather approaching, I wanted to highlight some of the dress code restrictions per the Region 15 Board of Education. Region 15 prohibits shirts and/or blouses that reveal the abdomen, chest, or undergarments. Footwear that mars floors or is a safety hazard. And shorts, miniskirts, or pants that reveal the upper thigh or undergarments.
Thanks so much to all who have donated to our Region 15 Elementary Collection Drive to benefit the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen. Your support and generosity is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Furman
Principal

Read Across America
We will celebrate an entire week of (optional) Spirit Days next week to continue our Celebration of Reading this month! Please see the attached flyer.
March Book A Day Challenge
During the month of March, we will challenge students and staff to read at least ONE book a day. The PES PTO has generously purchased 5 sets of 25 books for us to use again this year!
Students will also be challenged to read one picture book a day at home during the month of March. All students who complete this task and return a reading log, will be invited to an ice cream party with Mrs. Furman and Mrs. Mastropietro!
PES Read-A-Thon!
On Friday (March 4th) we will also have our 5th Annual School-Wide Read-A-Thon to raise money for Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury. This group and its volunteers use the funds to help teach adults to read, and to support preschool storytime programs. We are all very excited to do something we love to help those in need. We will dress Comfy and Cozy on this day! It is our hope that friends and family members will sponsor our students here at PES for all the reading they do on this day. Collecting donations is optional. Please see attached flyer!

This year’s collection includes three pieces that received honorable mentions at the CAEA Scholastic Art Show, a high-quality level, a professionally juried event that recognizes only the best CT student artwork from students enrolled in public, parochial, and private schools In Connecticut.
The exhibit will also include art from some of the younger students in Region 15, including work from Pomperaug Elementary School (PES) 4th Grader Maddox Steeves. Maddox’s landscape drawing and painting showcase the talents of our students at every level.
From the PES Health Office and Attendance
You may be getting a letter home regarding absences thus far this year. What is needed in these cases is a simple, hand-written letter by parent or guardian explaining why your child was absent on those dates and containing your signature. Any doctor's notes are also welcomed to help excuse the absence. Please remember, going forward, to send in a note upon your child's return to school if your child will be absent for any reason or fill out the online 'Reason for Absence form' (found on the Pomperaug Elementary homepage).
Over the next several weeks, we will be conducting hearing and vision screenings in the health office on our 1st, 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders, per required state guidelines. If a referral to a specialist is recommended, you will be notified via letter, which will be sent home with your child. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Cronin directly at 203-264-6230.
SCHOOL HEALTH AND SAFETY
We continue to follow the guidance of local and state health officials with respect to keeping our school community safe. Be on the lookout for detailed updates from Superintendent Smith.
