Strong Leaders Find Mentors
We are encouraging all of your students to find a role model upperclassmen mentor who will always be on their side, offer strategies, and let them vent by the end of the semester.
People find veterans to mentor them in all professional workplaces during the 1st and 2nd year. In college, this looks like sisters/brothers in academic honor societies and social orgs.
How To Find One
Start with the groups they've already joined like Athletics, Music, Dance, etc to see if they have a program matching upperclassmen with 1st year students.
The PALS program also provides trained upperclassmen mentors with leadership and team collaboration training.

Public Speaking Horrors
Egocentrism - the delusion in adolescent psychology that people are paying way more attention to you than they actually are.
This overwhelming feeling hits when they're walking in the hallways, the cafeteria, or coming late into class.
They need to remind themselves that when they're in the cafeteria, they're thinking about their food. When watching class presentations, they're thinking about their own presentation. When someone walks in late to class, they forget all about it when the teacher starts talking again.
Please help us by acknowledging what they're going through. The fear is real. Their peers remembering and paying extremely close attention to them isn't real.

Prioritizing the Priorities
"I don't have time."
Your students may be getting stressed about juggling all their classes and activities.
As a tip, you can talk to them about what their daily schedule looks like. Then, simply ask, "How's that working for you?"
They may not be able to come up with a solution right away, but the knowledge that they have control to change their priority arrangement will get them thinking.
Remember, they don't want you to fix their problem. It's Not About The Nail.

Last 2 Path Projects of the Semester
Culminating Projects
We're still practicing team collaboration. In small groups, students will work with a lesson that the class covered this semester and redesign it for their class.
Midterm LTHS Program Projects
Students in small groups will pick an LTHS program to present and pitch to the class. Could be anything from athletics, fine arts, a club, an advanced level course, etc.
*Just like the Active Listening Project, there will be a folder in Schoology with a step by step checklist and places to turn in work. Next Newsletter will have more details and copies.*
Theater Showcase
Theater gave us a wonderful comedic preview of their latest show Be Chill about the perils of high school in our Black Box Theater. Music, lights, sound, singing, dancing, and lot of laughs.
LTHS has 2 options for courses:
Theater and Theater Technology
We learned about ways to improve our resumés with the opportunities provided by the program: Acting
Public Speaking
Marketing
Team Collaboration
Lighting and Sound Design
Engineering
Carpentry and more!
LTHS does around 9 shows a year, providing more opportunities for actors and techies than the average high school. Thank you Ms. Guckian, Mr. Bartosh, Mr. Stahlecker, and Ms. Stokes our Theater teachers for your hard work!

Ms. Seglem
"Ms. Seglem has really helped me get a understanding of what high school is going to be like. She is strict, but in a good way and very reasonable. She has a reason for everything and she has helped me get a better work ethic and to take high school seriously because it matters."
Mrs. Alvis
"Mrs. Alvis was really helpful with my DBQ. She really helped me understand what I needed to do."
