Counseling Department Update

Oct. 16 - Nov. 16

This Month...

Personal Development: Students have completed most recently units on stress management, the hierarchy of needs and effective communication. Ms. Jacobsen & Mrs. Greene have also started weekly lessons with the special education class.

Career Exploration: Students are completing a unit focused on Careers & Money. Their main project is a life project where each student is assigned a job and had to research their career, finding a place to live, transportation, budgeting for meals and creating a budget.

Small Groups: Mrs. Greene has a total of 6 small groups, two for each grade level on topics such as motivation, leadership and self-esteem. Ms. Jacobsen runs an 8th grade girls group on relational aggression and self-esteem. Ms. Jacobsen also has 6th and 7th grade groups on bullying prevention and conflict resolution.

Professional Development

  • Oct. 18-20 Ms. Jacobsen & Mrs. Greene went to the Colorado State Counseling Conference.
ICAP: As a part of the state mandate, we have begun to complete the students' Individual Career and Academic Plans through the Naviance system. This semester we are beginning with 8th grade and will continue with 7th and 6th grade in the spring.

School Counseling Advisory Council

The purpose of the advisory council is to provide feedback on program goals, review program results, make recommendations, and advocate for the school counseling program.

We would like to invite the staff to be a part of this team. We meet once per semester and plan to meet next month. Stay tuned for more information about the upcoming meeting.

During the 2017-18 school year, the counseling team will be working towards developing a school counseling program that meets the standards of the ASCA (American School Counseling Association) National Model. It is an ambitious plan to implement a comprehensive program in one year, but the support from all stakeholders makes this possible. By implementing a comprehensive program, we hope to meet the requirements that will get us RAMP (Recognized ASCA Model Program) Certified.
