Positive Behavior Support by Mrs. Cristan, Assistant Principal
The library is a truly special place at Flour Bluff Elementary! It provides great opportunities for our students to explore their interests through books and helps to nurture the love of reading. These are the PBIS expectations for the library:
Expectation 1 Follow Directions Listen and follow directions. After checkout, sit at the tables and read quietly.
Expectation 2 Be Polite Enter quietly. Line up correctly and wait your turn. Speak to others with a respectful voice. Say "please, thank you, and excuse me".
Expectation 3 Be Safe Respect others' space. Sit at tables correctly. Use shelf marker correctly. Expectation 4 Be Prepared Bring necessary books and pink slips to the library. By following these expectations in the library, we can provide everyone the opportunity to experience the wonderful world of reading.
Counselor's Corner by Mrs. Villarreal
For the 5th six weeks, I will be introducing the Character Trait of RESOURCEFULNESS. Being resourceful means having the ability to approach a problem in different ways. It requires the ability to be creative and to pursue a solution from more than one direction. Resourcefulness can be learned over time through a variety of experiences. Allowing children to try things on their own, coming up with solutions to problems, and discovering their own skills and talents through creative play are ways to tap into resourcefulness. When working on problem solving, students should ask themselves: Is there another way to get the solution I want, What are some things I can try on my own to help solve this problem, and Where can I find information to help me. Students will become more independent and gain self-confidence when they are able to tap into their own talents and resources to solve problems. We will also take time out to work on goal setting and career exploration. With the STAAR test just around the corner, I will continue to discuss stress management and anxiety relief with those students in need of extra help.
Things To Do At Home
*Practice relaxation exercises and deep breathing techniques with your child.
*Encourage positive thinking about the testing process.
*Make sure your child has a stress-free morning: have clothes, shoes, and backpacks ready to go.
*****REMINDER- GT testing: 4/1/19-4/30/19. Please call me at 694-9593 for more information. Scores will be available by May 31, 2019.
CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS by Mrs. Hoover
7 TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL STAAR TESTING DAYS
1. Know when your child is taking the STAAR test.
Here's the schedule from the TEA:
Tuesday, April 9:
- Grade 4 Writing
Monday, May 13:
- Grade 3 & 4 Math
Tuesday, May 14:
- Grade 3 & 4 Reading
2. Make sure your student has their clothes and school bag ready to go the night before so they aren't late to school on testing day.
3. Make sure they go to bed early. It's more important to get sleep than cram for the test.
4. Make sure your child is well-rested and has had a nutritious breakfast, that way they'll be able to concentrate on the exam.
5. Tell your child to try and stay as relaxed as possible.
6. Make sure they have layered clothing in case they get cold during the test.
7. Tell your child they're going to do great on the test and that you believe in them!
Nurse's Corner by Nurse Cheryl
FLU SEASON CAN LAST AS LATE AS MAY! With that in mind, it is not too late to get a flu vaccine. We are doing everything possible at school to prevent the spread of illness, including; extra sanitizing procedures, encouraging good hand washing and cough covering techniques, and adhering strictly to our fever policy. Our policy is that of the Texas Department of State Health Services, and states that a student must be “fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever suppressing medications. Fever is a temperature of 100° Fahrenheit (37.8° Celsius) or higher.” Please help us keep our district as healthy as possible by also following this guideline as well as encouraging good personal hygiene. Also, if a student needs to take any medication at school, prescribed or over-the-counter, do not allow your student to bring the medication to school him/herself. All medication needs to be brought to and from school by a parent. Thank you for helping keep all of our Hornets healthy! Please call Nurse Cheryl if you have any questions or concerns. 361-694-9560.
