A Message from Mr. S
Hello Mustang Families:
Mrs. Pass and I have been so impressed with all of our students and teachers’ eagerness to get back into our routines and to pick up where we left off before the long break. Our students have returned to school ready to learn and ready to work. January is a busy month for educators when it comes to safety and behavior. Kentucky schools are required by law to conduct four drills – lockdown, earthquake, severe weather and fire – within the first 30 days of the school year and again in January. Safety is our school’s number one priority for your child.
Not only do we focus on reviewing our safety procedures throughout the month, we also use the first two weeks back to reteach and review behavior expectations for our students. As a PBIS school, we know the importance of creating a safe, engaging learning environment. To help with this, we do what some call “booster sessions”. Booster sessions are used to reteach rules and expectations after long breaks, when we anticipate increased misbehaviors, and to teach specific areas that continue to be a problematic.
Some of you may be familiar with PBIS but I wanted to update our parents and families on one of the main pillars of our school’s success – of course it is because of our students, teachers, and families all working together but PBIS plays a vital role as well.
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a systems approach for establishing the social culture and individualized behavioral supports needed for schools to achieve both social and academic success for all students. Through this framework, we promote positive behaviors with all of our students and provide interventions when students need more support with behavior. Erpenbeck Elementary School has customized the PBIS model to meet the needs of all of our students. Our Mustangs are encouraged to follow three basic behavior expectations: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.
PBIS is designed to encourage positive behaviors by recognizing and rewarding students engaging in those behaviors. PBIS inspires teachers, parents and administrators to be proactive by anticipating and addressing behaviors concerns before they occur. There are three critical features – Systems, Practices, and Data – that work together to promote positive, predictable, safe environments for everyone across all school settings.
Families and PBIS
This is where you come in… Parents and guardians can play a major role in the success of PBIS. Research indicates that when families are meaningfully involved in educational activities their children do better in school and with social development. The presence of parents in schools not only provides additional academic support but also creates community and cultural connections. We encourage parents and guardians to support the PBIS process through modeling positive social interactions and talking with your child about our school’s expectations and importance of: Being Safe, Being Respectful, and Being Responsible not only at school but at home, too!
Enjoy the long weekend with your family!
