The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - June 13, 2021
A Note from Principal Welch
Dear Families,
We did it! You did it! We have reached the final week of the 2020-2021 school year! This is a full week of school and I want to remind our Cohort B students, Friday is a full day of school. This week we also distribute the Yearbooks that our PTA created. A special THANK YOU to our PTA as they have again funded a yearbook for every student at Cottage Lake!
This week is also our technology collection for ALL students who have a district-issued device or hotspot. We need to collect back ALL devices and hotspots that are Northshore devices. When you return the device, please don't forget the charger, as well. If your student is a hybrid student, your classroom teacher has sent home the form that should be returned with the device and charger. If your student is remote, we will have the forms on hand so we can give you a receipt for returning the device and charger. If your student needs a device for summer learning, there is a link below where you can request one. The pick-up for those summer devices is separate from the device return. The device & hotspot return dates are:
- Cohort B students - Wednesday, June 16 between 10:00 AM-3:00 PM
- Cohort A students - Friday, June 18 between 10:00 AM-4:00 PM
- Fully remote students - Friday, June 18 between 10:00 AM-4:00 PM
There is other important information below I am sharing with you. Please do take the time to read the information over. Please know that our front office is closed for the month of July. I am encouraging all staff to close their computers and take a break from work during this time. If you send an email, please know staff may not respond to your email until they are back to work which is in August. Sarah and I will return to the office in early August. I will be sending emails with further information at this time. Class placements and teacher assignments will be sent towards the end of August.
For my 5th grade families - Be on the lookout for an email from me a little later with all the details of the fun events planned for this week to celebrate your students. Our promotion video will go live tomorrow, June 14, in the evening. The specifics of this event will be included in the email. I thank each of you for sharing your students with us! Many of you have been involved greatly in our PTA for so many years, you have been present in classrooms, and you have been willing to lend a hand any time we asked. Thank you! You have amazing children and we will miss both you all, as well as your students. You are off to your next middle school adventures. I wish you all the best in the years to come! Congratulations to the graduating class of 2028!
For other families who are leaving Cottage Lake - Thank you for sharing your students with us! We will miss you and your students and hope our paths will cross again another day. I wish you the very best in the years to come.
For those returning in the fall - See you soon. :)
I hope you all can take a little time to make memories this summer! Play hard. Get outside. Have fun!
Thank you for a great year, one I will never forget!
Let's have a great week!

Summer i-Ready use
We are pleased to inform you that i-Ready will be available during the summer through August 13th. We believe that all children will benefit from the use of i-Ready this summer. Please support your child to spend about 30-45 minutes per week on i-Ready Math and 30-45 minutes per week on i-Ready Reading throughout the summer. Consistent use of i-Ready will help your child to continue to grow and prevent learning loss.
I-Ready Personalized Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and needs, so your child can learn at a pace that is just right for them. These lessons are fun and interactive to keep your child engaged as they learn.
To log in during the summer, your child will first log into Clever (my.nsd.org) using their NSD account. Then they will click on the I-Ready icon.
Here is a link to the I-Ready family guide, which gives more information about how to support your child and see their progress.
Mrs. Skinner, one of our Cottage Lake teachers, will be keeping an eye on student i-Ready use over the summer. If you need help with your child’s account during July or August, please reach out to Mrs. Skinner at kskinner@nsd.org.

Unleash the Brilliance (UtB)
The Northshore School District was one of two districts in the state, awarded with the Racial Discipline Gap grant from OSPI. We have partnered with Unleash the Brilliance (UTB) to empower youth to make positive decisions and build a positive partnership between schools and families. The collaboration between Northshore and UTB is to inspire youth to share ideas and tools with students that empower and inspire them to value the process of learning and proactively engage in their education, in their future, and with their community. Unleash the Brilliance (UTB) is hosting parent and student success workshops in partnership with the Northshore School District to reduce infractions and discipline. These informational workshops will in turn help staff to become aware of related issues affecting our students.
These free workshops are open to all Northshore families and will focus on:
- Best practices on how to prevent suspension or expulsion
- How to manage the disciplinary hearing, appeal, and review procedures to work collaboratively to find alternatives to suspension or expulsion
- Share your thoughts, hopes, concerns and hear from other parents
