Follow OSS MH on Social Media
Orlando Science Middle/High Charter School will continue to follow the guidance and best practices of our county, Orange County Public Schools, regarding the threat of COVID-19. OCPS has developed a Coronavirus Disease 2020 (COVID-19) information page located at the below link. This website offers prevention strategies, lists signs of symptoms, and provides links to additional information.
As we enter Spring Break, traditionally, families take the opportunity to travel both locally or internationally. We want to remind everyone that if you do travel internationally, or go on a cruise, you should follow the Center for Disease Control & Prevention guidelines when you get back. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has page dedicated to the virus and recommendations for a 14-day self-quarantine. Please view the link to this page below.
While it is not required, we are asking that you kindly inform the school if you are travelling internationally during Spring Break. For families traveling outside of Orange County, please be cautious of the potential risks when your student returns to school and be sure to take appropriate measures before returning.
People who are travelling during Spring Break need to follow the guidelines of the CDC strictly in terms of staying healthy and whether any additional steps need to be taken upon return. Like all other OCPS schools, we are following the guidance of the CDC and Florida Department of Health (DOH) in these matters.
As being precautious, and based upon the feedbacks of CDC and OCPS, the following events have been canceled: Talent Show, Saturday in the Park at College Park, both middle and high school CMP Camp, MPA Band Performances, Winter Park Art Festival. Decisions of the Saturday Studies, PTC, Gradventure, Gradbash, Senior Trip and other middle/high school events’ situations will be announced to the respective parents soon.
In regard to the school operation after Spring Break, as of now, there are no reported cases in Orange County. OPCS has informed us that there are no school closures after Spring Break as of now. If there is anything changes regarding that decision, we will inform our parents and students through various available resources immediately; sharing necessary protocol accordingly. Please follow our school’s Facebook and Twitter pages and download the school app for the most up-to-date information.
I wish every Orca family a very happy and healthy Spring Break!
Sincerely, Abdulaziz Yalcin, M.Ed.

congratulations, tiffani g.!!
Tiffani G. was the category winner and Grand Prize winner at the Lockheed Martin Science Challenge at the Orlando Science Center on March 6-7, 2020. She won $4,400 and $1,000 will go to her teacher, Ms. Cramp, of Orlando Science Middle School. Tiffani hypothesized that magnets could be used to clean up ocean oil spills and her findings support her hypothesis. We are so proud of her hard work and dedication to the environment. Great job, Tiffani!

Orlando Science Schools - Fencing Club
Orcas, we are pleased to announce that fencing club is resuming in March. Thank you for those who came to the introductory meeting with the coach Seachrist. We are please to introduce Ms. Jenny Seachrist to our Orca community.
Ms. Seachrist is the owner of Orlando Fencing Club and Winter Garden Fencing Academy, she has been fencing for over 20 years, and is certified by safe sport, USFA, and is an OCPS vendor with full credentials.
If you are interested in the sport and would like to know more details. Please see the following information and come to our first club meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd at Lynx campus.
Students can start getting ready at that time so they are prepared for practice. Please be sure to send your students with full length athletic pants, shoes, and a t shirt. Water bottles are recommended. Pick up time is at 5:30 pm through the aftercare area, you will not be charged for aftercare those days as long as you pick up your student before 6:00 pm.
At our first meeting all forms will be due. These forms are just like our aftercare forms and will require the payments be set up with confirmation of credit card and photo ID. The club is $50 a month and your last payment will come out on the 1st of May. Any gear you would like to purchase will be paid ahead. I will be at the first meeting and will assist you with your orders, paperwork and payments.
Gear: We have two packages available. The student is required to purchase their personal items such as socks, shoes, chest plates(girls), Plasteron, and a glove. The total for this package with the school is $110 and will include the OSS gym bag. Shoes are not included because you can choose any athletic shoe you want. They do not need to be fencing specific. Our full package includes Mask, uniform, weapon, practice foil, and Bag. The chest protector and socks can be added on.
The school will provide a practice uniform that will be fitted to your student but will also be left at school in our fencing cabinet, these will all be numbered and your student will be assigned a number. The school will also be purchasing weapons for practice. Once we get to a point where the students are competing we will provide competing weapons as well. You will be responsible for the uniform for competitions but this is down the line. These uniforms will only be worn at competitions so they stay fresh and looking nice.
Parent assistance: We will be asking our fencing parents to help out from time to time with providing water, snacks, and an extra hand with events. All parents are welcome to come to practices and watch their students, and maybe even learn themselves!
Safe Sport: Please take a moment to look at these links, these are very helpful and the students are required to take them.

30/30 DISMISSAL RULE
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that is nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
