STAFF WEEKLY UPDATE!!!
"LEADING WITH HEART" 1-21-19
Good Things
- We had a nice turn-out yesterday for United We Walk. I would like to thank Mrs. Strutton, Mrs. Thomas-Pearsall and Mrs. Vannostrand for attending and walking along the Sheiko students and families in attendance. It was a nice presentation and dedication for the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
- Many thanks to the Special Education Team and all their hard work. They have filled in the gaps for temporary staff, they have been on the scene for kids in crisis and have held down their caseloads with an overflow of new testing. My appreciation goes out to that team for going well above and beyond. Thanks ladies for all you do.
- Starting immediately, Jennifer Bennett will no longer service Sheiko Elementary as our Literacy coach. She will service only Roosevelt and Abbott Middle School. Our very own Melissa Levin will take over the .2 position that Jennifer held here. Remember Jennifer was being paid out of our title funds, this will be the same for Melissa Levin. Congratulations Melissa and teachers, please reach out to Melissa for the same service and support you may need around literacy. More information will be sent regarding the new scheduled time for Melissa.
- Our condolences go out to grade 3 teacher Ashley Moss on the passing of her grandfather this past week. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
- We had a really nice turn out for our PTO meeting. This month we celebrated the winners of the class Spelling Bee. Next month we will be celebrating the Lego League Winners. Thanks to the support of Mrs. Thomas-Pearsall.
- We found the owner of the lunch bag!!!

Planning Surveys
Capturing Kids Hearts
In your mailbox, you will find a bundle of colorful hearts. These are to be used starting Feb. 1. They are really up to you how you want to use them, but some ideas include writing an affirmation to each of your students and putting in on their locker. You could leave one for your students on their work area or give as an affirmation.
These are just to have a little spirit during the month of February. If you have any questions or good ideas, please let me know.
Thank you,
Tiffaney
FEBRUAY 1ST WORLD READ ALOUD DAY!!!
World Read Aloud Day is Friday, Feb 1st
(it is a half day of school /Tuesday Specials Schedule) I’ll be at Scotch
Kate Messner has organized a contact list to SKYPE or video chat with an author, see the details below.
I searched through the complete list & there are a few authors with available time slots, who you may be interested in connecting with. I copied their information at the bottom of this list.
For the complete list, go to:
Don’t let the “skype” or video chat part prevent you from reaching out to the authors. Technology Support, Rachelle, or I can help you prepare for that part.
Take a peek at the list below & if you’re interested reach out to an author. It would be a fun way for you & your students to celebrate reading.
WORLD READ ALOUD DAY IS FEBRUARY 1, 2019
The authors listed below have volunteered their time to read aloud to classrooms and libraries all over the world. These aren’t long, fancy presentations; a typical one might go like this:
1-2 minutes: Author introduces himself or herself and talks a little about his or her books.
3-5 minutes: Author reads aloud a short picture book, or a short excerpt from a chapter book/novel
5-10 minutes: Author answers a few questions from students about reading/writing
1-2 minutes: Author book-talks a couple books he or she loves (but didn’t write!) as recommendations for the kids
If you’re a teacher or librarian and you’d like to have an author Skype with your classroom or library on World Read Aloud Day, here’s how to do it:
Check out the list of volunteering authors below and visit their websites to see which ones might be a good fit for your students.
Contact the author directly by using the email provided or clicking on the link to his or her website and finding the contact form. Please be sure to provide the following information in your request:
Your name and what grade(s) you work with
Your city and time zone (this is important for scheduling!)
Possible times to Skype on February 1st. Please note authors’ availability and time zones. Adjust accordingly if yours is different!
Your Skype username
A phone number where you can be reached on that day in case of technical issues
Please understand that authors are people, too, and have schedules and personal lives, just like you, so not all authors will be available at all times. It may take a few tries before you find someone whose books and schedule fit with yours. If I learn that someone’s schedule for the day is full, I’ll put a line through their name – that means the author’s schedule is full, and no more visits are available. (Authors, please send an email to me know when you’re all booked up! And please note that due to travel and other obligations, it may take up to a week for me to update.)
You may want to have a sign-up Genius to have a parent or two come in to read to the class. Promote family reading together this week. I encourage you to have your class participate in some manner. Capture your class on twitter# Sheiko2020
