Johnny Appleseed a.k.a. John Chapman
Wednesday was John Chapman's birthday; you know him as Johnny Appleseed. We've read several accounts of his life that, according to the Indiana Academic Social Studies Standards "distinguish between fact and fiction in historical accounts by comparing documentary sources on historical figures and events with fictional characters and events in stories." Did you know that Chapman was buried in Ft. Wayne, IN?
Our Heads are in the Clouds
This week in science we've been looking for evidence that air is matter--that it is something real. We experimented heavily with air resistance using parachutes. What a fun time this was!
This is a great springboard for our study of clouds. We are identifying, observing, and recording the clouds we see each day. We are learning to make connections between these types of observations and the resulting weather. Ask your child what (s)he knows about cirrus, stratus, cumulus, and cumulonimbus clouds. This study helps us to address the following Indiana Academic Science Standard:
- "Record detailed weather observations, including cloud cover, cloud type, and type of precipitation on a daily basis and correlate observations to the time of year. Chart and graph collected data."
Be Drug and Bully-Free
Once again, we are taking a month-long approach to Red Ribbon Week this year. In recognition of Bully Prevention Month and Red Ribbon Week, we are encouraging our faculty and students to participate in the activities scheduled each Wednesday throughout the month of October. We will be focusing on making healthy choices and pledging to live drug and bully-free lives.
Wednesday, Oct. 3- I'm a "Jean-ius"--Blue Out Against Bulling!
- Blue Out--everyone wear BLUE.
- Dress as your favorite Super Hero.
- Wear clothing that represents your favorite place of travel.
Wednesday, Oct. 31- Say "Boo" to Bullying and Drugs!
- Everyone wear (school appropriate) Halloween costumes
Next Week's Share Topic
My Favorite Book When I Was Little: Choose a book that you loved when you were little. Who read it to you most often? You may bring in the book and retell the story or read it to the class (if it is short enough to be completed in approximately three minutes). If you don’t have the book anymore, you may draw a picture of a part of the book.
Scholastic Book Fair
Mrs. Grissom, our school librarian, is planning an exciting book fair October 1st-5th. This is an opportunity for students and their families to purchase low cost books. Students will be visiting this coming Monday at 1:30 p.m. and again during their regularly scheduled library time (Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m.). Parents, you are more than welcome to meet your child at the library if you choose to shop at that time, or you can just send money if you wish for your child to purchase. Look for more detailed information in your child's Friday folder.
IXL
IXL is now available on iPhones! Now, your child can access 5,700 math and language arts skills in the palm of his or her hand. Students can make meaningful progress anytime, anywhere and their work will be synced and saved!
The Corner Market
The Corner Market is aways the 2nd Wednesday of the month. This month it will be open Wednesday, October 10th from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m. at Union County High School.
