Sept 28th - Oct 2nd
Important Dates
10.2: Math Unit 1 Test
ELA
Students will continue to work on making inferences and drawing conclusions while citing textual evidence. We will be wrapping up our realistic fiction read aloud Towers Falling by Jewell Parker Rhodes. If you haven't had a chance to ask your student about the book, ask! They should be able to share all we have talked about with this book. We will be finishing the book with some activities while practicing social distancing. Students have also been asked to write a short essay on "What Patriotism Means to Me" for a VFW essay contest. Encourage your student to work on this as the deadline is Oct 30. Students should continue to read 30 minutes each night at home!

Math
Essential Learning Outcomes for Unit 1:
ELO 1: Find the area of shapes by breaking and putting back together the shapes into rectangles or triangles.
ELO 2: Students will be able to find area, surface area and volume using nets.
This week in math we will be finishing up our Area Unit. We will be covering surface area, nets of 3D shapes, and covering a little bit of volume. On Friday we will be talking our Post Test for area. Again, make sure your students are coming to school with a charged Chromebook and that we try to bring a water bottle.
Reminder: if they are not completing practice problems in class, this becomes homework.

Science
This week we are continuing our Engineering Design unit! Students will build a swing set and learn how to combine design ideas.
6-8.ETS1.A.1: Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
6-8.ETS1.B.1: Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem
6-8.ETS1.B.3: Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
6-8.ETS1.B.2: Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several designing solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.

Social Studies
Standard 1: Students can explain the causes and results of the Agricultural Revolution
Standard 2: Student can describe how the geography of river valleys led to settlement and the beginning of civilization
This week we will be completing our first unit with a short review and test on the Agricultural Revolution. Students are encouraged to bring a book if they finish the test early.
After testing is completed we will move onto our next unit, Ancient Mesopotamia.
