Thank You
We've spoken to a few teams this week regarding school discipline. This has been an issue that continues to resurface. We hear you. And we agree.
We have started research about school-wide programs, such as CHAMPs. Mrs. Perigo also recently attended Covey's Leader in Me Conference. (If you have not had a chance to read The Leader in Me, I highly recommend it.) I believe there are some excellent lessons to be learned from this model that would greatly impact student behavior. We don't want to throw a bandaid on the issues.
"Kids don't listen." "Kids think they are in charge." "<insert grade level or teacher name> won't keep them accountable!" We can complain all day long, but it does not help the situation. We will all end up grumpier and solution-less.
What can we do to empower kids to want to be well-behaved? How can we give kids purpose?
Daniel Pink's book DRIVE addresses the importance of intrinsically motivating people. (I also highly recommend this book! Shocker.) Extrinsic motivations (or even consequences) only work for a short amount of time. Treasure box, stickers, stamps, planner signings, walking laps--they'll work for some kids longer than others. But eventually, most kids will be calloused to these motivators. You see this daily.
We are forming a discipline committee...I'm hoping to find a better name. Discipline committee sounds incredibly negative. If you are interested in being a part of this behavioral paradigm shift at Dodd, let us know!
