From the Assistant Principal's desk…
Last week Mrs George in the office was discussing her blossoming ‘side-hustle’ – her yarn making hobby/business. She makes yarn (wool) from alpacas, has it processed, dyed and then sells it at local markets. She was very excited about it and I must have made a funny noise or comment about the oddness of the endeavour which led to a discussion about the importance of finding and exploring your own passion. This is what we do as educators and what we believe in as a school – we need to help students find what they are good at and what they love and nurture it.
A similar experience happened last night when I saw one of our students at their dance class. I had seen this student throughout her day at school, but hardly recognised her at the dance class. She was beaming, happy, exuberant, full of excitement and life. This, dancing, was obviously her passion! And she was amazing at it.
On the flip side, NAPLAN results were sent home with students this week. They are a snapshot of how your children – our students – performed in specific learning areas on a particular day. As a school we do take them seriously and use these results to analyse where our curriculum focus should be directed. But they do not capture everything or even close to everything about the children sitting the tests. They don’t measure how much you love or how good you are at tap dancing or jazz. They don’t test how fast you can run or bowl a cricket ball. They don’t measure your ability to draw or build something out of wood. They won’t tell anyone how good your manners are, if you are nice or if you have good friendships.
As a school we will always strive to develop the passions of our students, alongside academic success, so that they are as excited and happy to be at school as the girl at the dance studio.
