First Aid
for children
Into to first AId
First aid can be very important in saving someone's life or preventing medical complications or infections. When dealing with children, it is important to help, while keeping them calm and only helping in ways that are suitable for kids.
Know the differences between children and adults
from CPR to head injuries, the ways to help children are often different with how to help adults. Before performing first aid on a child, make sure you know the differences between children and adults and how to include these in your method of care.
Use gentle products
When dealing with children, especially infants, keep in mind that some products should not be used on kids. For example, infants are known to stick their hands in their mouthes, so this must be accounted for when preventing infection on a hand injury.
Call 911 when necessary
A smaller person does not mean a smaller problem- know your limits on the help you can offer and call 911 if you are questioning your level of care.
More Tips
Before Anything else...
find the parents. Do not attempt to help a child without parent permission, and hopefully a parent should be nearby, either looking for help or unaware of the situation.
Be Comforting
most likely, a child that needs first aid attention will be upset, afraid, or intimidated by you. While their injury may be urgent, you must make them feel comfortable and let them know that you are here to help.
