Reading
Interesting Stuff:
Multiple studies have proven that reading literary fiction makes us better able to understand other people, empathize with them and view the world from their perspective.
"Novel finding: reading literary fiction improves empathy." Scientific American, Oct. 2013.
"Does reading fiction make you a better person?" The Washington Post, July 22, 2016.
Social Studies
The 20th century saw two world wars, the rise of competing economic systems, and unprecedented technological change. In Social Studies this term we will analyze how major world events of the 20th century affect the world today, identify key events, ideas, and leaders of the 20th century beginning with World War I. We will come to understand processes of revolution by examining social, religious, and economic issues that may lead to revolution, by identifying and comparing how revolutions develop in multiple areas of human life e.g. scientific, agricultural, industrial, political, and medical. We will also compare political maps and make inferences about the continuing effect of physical geography on cultural development and the influences of power and greed.
As part of this unit we will:
· Memorize the current countries of Europe with a weekly quiz by region.
· We will also be reading novels associated with WWI and WWII. Our current novel is “Letters from Rifka”, by Karen Hesse.
If you have stories about family members who have served, please share them with your children. Discuss the novels we are reading and take an active part in discussions about conflict and revolution in our world today. Also, please help your student study for their map quizzes. Students have a blank map, a labeled map, and a list of countries to memorize by region. There is an excellent website, sheppardsoftware.com, with an interactive map game to help students practice.Math

Mind Set
Some students have a hard time with failure because all they see are others being successful. Below is a graphic that can help you discuss these misconceptions with your child.
