The Carleton Chronicle
A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
Thank you!
Thank you for those that visited Carleton on Wednesday for our Title I meeting and Open House. It was great to see so many of you there. Thank you for being involved in your student's education and supporting them throughout middle school.
I would also like to thank our Booster Club as they were able to have a table at Open House that was selling Carleton Spirit Wear. Also, as mentioned on Wednesday night, they have secured a number of sponsors for our Carleton Shuffle scheduled for October 6th including; Jerry Luck School of Music, Gadget Drop, 5 Star Lanes, and Extra Credit Union. Please visit these local businesses and thank them for helping Carleton students.
Lastly, our first Booster Club Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 19th at 6pm in the Media Center. Please join us and meet our Booster Board and hear about the incredible year they have planned for our students.
Helpful Hints for Homework
Developing routines and good study habits often begin in the middle school years. It is common for students to have a certain amount of homework every night and is important that they have a system for completing such tasks for their learning and reinforcement. We also want them to learn the skills now so that they are able to #PracticePreparing for high school. Below is some information pertaining to homework.
Think it through
Before your child begins, have him/her make a to-do list. Example: ELA paragraph, complete Science lab write-up, practice my instrument, problems 1-11 in math. Then, suggest that they number the tasks, from toughest to easiest, and start with the hard stuff. This "save the easiest for last" strategy will help them finish on a high note, perhaps inspiring them to get in some extra time studying.
Think about time
Ask your child to consider different time slots they can use to get work done. For instance, maybe he could set aside a weekend morning or Sunday night. Also, some students have time after lunch to tackle a few problems or read an excerpt from their book. We also have students that come back from the high school (1st hour) and they have several minutes of study time that could be used while waiting for second hour to start at Carleton. Encourage your child to be productive while at school, often finishing homework during class time if the teacher allows. The more they do, the more time they'll have for fun later.
Think positive
Help your middle schooler see homework as a chance to prove their independence by getting their work done on time and doing it by themselves. Boost their confidence by telling them, "Homework gives you a chance to show off what you have learned." Consider rewarding them with an incentive if they finish their work.
Lastly, I would encourage you to check student grades and missing assignments on PowerSchool. Have your child sit with you while you do this and gradually release the responsibility over to your son or daughter throughout the school year.
I hope you found these tips helpful. Working together, we can help every student succeed.

Parents,
As we focus on practicing punctuality and developing the skills of showing up to work on time, I wanted to share a few statistics about the importance of school attendance (a few students early to class pictured on the right).
· Students missing more than just 3 days of school have shown lower achievement on standardized test scores.
· Students who are chronically absent (18 days, or two days a month) just one year between 8th and 12th grade are more than 3 times more likely to drop out.
· The New York City juvenile justice program found that 79% of young people incarcerated had chronic absenteeism right before their arrest.
· Students who have improved their attendance in high school, even those with a history of chronic absenteeism show an increase in graduation rates.
The message behind these statistics is that showing up to school whenever possible dramatically increases your child’s ability to graduate high school successfully. So what can we do as parents to help make sure our children are in school as often as possible and on time?
-Remind your son or daughter that there is no substitute for being in class. While it is important to catch up on work at home if you have to be absent, the teacher instruction that is lost cannot be replaced.
-Whenever possible, schedule appointments for before or after school hours. If this is not possible, try to arrange for the appointment to occur during lunchtime.
-Make sure your son or daughter can get at least nine hours of sleep, this will help them wake up and be ready in the morning. Have them turn in all electronic devices so they are not tempted to go on their devices when they should be sleeping.
-Remember, there are times your child is sick and needs to stay home. When your child has a fever keep them home to get the rest they need.
Have a great year as we practice punctuality together!
