Big picture

OFF TO A GREAT START

With our first full week now complete, we are off to a great start. Jefferson staff members are working hard to build positive relationships with all our students. New teachers and new students have been welcomed into our Jefferson family, and everyone is excited about the learning that lies ahead.

WHAT'S NEW?

New Staff Spotlight: Mr. Willette

Family: My son Owen is 4, my daughter Everly is 2, and my wife Mary is a special education teacher at East.

Education Experience: I graduated from MSU Mankato and would love to go back for my Masters in the next few years. I subbed a bunch in ISD77 and later taught 4 years of second grade in St. Clair.

Favorites: I love Mexican food, classic rock, and anything with an engine.

Hobbies: I enjoy being outside, going for bike rides with my family, and playing guitar

Reason I became a teacher: I was fortunate enough to work at ACES as a college student and loved working with the kids. That's when I switched majors from accounting to elementary education.

WHAT IS EXCEL?

Excel is an after school intervention for students who are in need of a little additional math instruction. Students are recommended for this program by their classroom teachers. If your child is recommended, you will receive registration information from the teacher. We use multiple data points to identify students for this program. If you have questions about the registration form or the registration process, please call the Jefferson office.

This year Excel will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the following school weeks.

October 23-November 7, November 27-December 19, January 8- March 6, April 2-May 1

**NOTE: No EXCEL on Nov. 13-14, 20-21, Dec 25- Jan. 2, Mar 12-13, Mar. 19-20 Mar. 26-27**

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING AT SCHOOL EVERY DAY AND BEING ON TIME

There is significant research that shows a high correlation between regular school attendance and academic success. Students who miss many days of school each year see a negative impact on their school success. It's incredibly important for children to be at school EVERY day they are healthy.

It's also very important for them to be here on time. That means they are dropped off at school in time for them to be in their seats and ready to learn before the 8:15 bell rings. Most classrooms at Jefferson begin the day with a morning meeting. This is a chance for students to share their strengths and get to know their classmates and an opportunity for teachers to build positive relationships with students. Children who are consistently late to school miss out on these wonderful connections.

Finally, families with a child or children who are frequently late or absent will receive letters from the school reminding them of the importance of attending regularly. This is district practice aligned with state attendance statutes.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Students Arriving at School Early: Adult supervision on the playground doesn't begin until 7:50. Please do not allow students who walk to school to arrive before this time. Please do not drop students off before this time. The safety of our students is extremely important to us. Students arriving at school before supervision is available is a significant safety concern.

Drop-Off / Pick-Up / Parking Procedures:

A.M. Drop-Off: Parents who drive their children to school should drop them off between 7:50 - 8:05 using the loop at the south end of the Jefferson campus. Use Fairfield Avenue to access the Pick-Up / Drop-Off loop. Please DO NOT drop students off at the main entrance before 8:05.

P.M. Pick-Up: Between 2:45 - 3:00 parents should use the loop accessible from Fairfield Avenue to pick up their children. Please DO NOT use the front parking lot / main entrance at this time. Reducing traffic in our main parking lot immediately after dismissal creates a safer situation for our students riding buses and walking home.

After 3:00 (or once the line of cars is through the pick-up loop shortly after 3:00) students who have yet to be picked up will be walked to the office to wait for their rides. Parents then need to park in the main lot and come to the office to get their children.

*ADDITIONAL NOTE: Because we have many new staff members who are still getting to know all our families, it's very helpful if the driver holds the pick-up number so teaching staff can see it as quickly as possible in the pick-up loop. This will make the process faster and more efficient.*
