Dogs on School Property
While we all over our furry four-legged friends, we must request residents to obey the signs stating that dogs are not allowed on school properties. Some residents have reportedly been walking their dogs on school property, which is not permitted under district policy. The policy states that pets aren't allowed on district property without permission and "a pet owner who brings or permits his/her animal on school grounds has committed an act of trespass."
A dog can be a joy but they are also a big responsibility. Schools acknowledge the benefits of walking to and from school in a family group with a dog. However, this may pose a potential increase in the risk of injury to children caused by dogs, such as, allergic reactions, bites, and scratches. Dogs may react adversely to unexpected noise and/or movement of children, even if they are very friendly.
Allergic reactions cannot be discounted from handling dogs, or just from being near them. Children known to have allergic reactions to dogs must have their access restricted.
Children that are bitten or scratched may result in injuries that range from superficial bites to severe bites. Care must be taken to the injury to prevent infection and a medical evaluation is warranted.
As a school we are legally required to report any animal bites to the local health department. In most cases, animals (vaccinated and non-vaccinated) should be confined and observed for a period of 10 days to observe for any clinical signs of rabies. Further instruction is given to the school nurse for any further direction or precautions to take.
