The Importance of Engagement
From the Desk of the Principal
Connecting With Your Classes
1. If you find you're double booked, and can't figure out a solution to be "in" everything, email your teachers. Communication is the key! They'll do everything they can to help you out.
2. Attend with a friend. Find a classmate who is taking the same course and set your weekly schedule together. Knowing someone else who will be online at that time can make attending more approachable as you get used to it.
3. ASK QUESTIONS. Those Google Meets are the time to learn more, get clarification, hear another way to figure something out, get different views and share your own, and get that social interaction many are craving.
4. Make a plan! On Thursdays, take the time to view every class. We're having planners printed to help you with this. Look at assignments that will be due and online interaction opportunities. Map it out on a planner - what are your goals and deadlines? What sessions will you attend? What questions do you have? Develop a system that works for you. If you're struggling with this, please reach out to your counselor or social worker for some help! (See below for a link to schedule a phone call or Google Meet with them.)
5. Don't procrastinate. I am really not one to talk and I do work well under pressure, but if I don't set some short term goals for myself on big tasks, I'll get overwhelmed. Battling the urge to put something off is a daily struggle for many of us. Don't wait until Tuesday to start work due Wednesday (don't even wait until Saturday to get started).
6. COMMUNICATE. Email your teachers, schedule an appointment with your counselor or social worker, check in with your case managers (if you have one), find friends in the same courses who can work together with you, but don't go it alone! We are here for you and so are your peers.

- Make sure you're using a compatible browser, and keep it updated. If you use a Chromebook, you'll be in Chrome, which is great! Google Chrome also works best with Google Apps.
- Try the CARD VIEW. Many students find this less overwhelming.
- SET YOUR PREFERENCES! Are you overwhelmed with notifications? You can fix that! You can choose how often you want to be notified (daily, weekly, or not at all). Go to global navigation, click on Account, then Notifications.
- Review assignment feedback. Look for feedback or speech options next to assignments in the gradebook.
- There's an app for that! Some students find they like the app on their smartphone, but remember that it can't do everything you can do on a computer. DO NOT TAKE QUIZZES on the app.
- It may be a good idea to type your responses in a Google doc and then cut and paste into Canvas. This ensures you never accidentally lose a response if something goes wrong in the submission process.
