Internet Find of the Week - September 23, 2013
Quick Search Tip
Here's how to use CTRL-F. Rather than scanning an entire web page looking for a key word, select CTRL-F. A small window will open. Type your key word into the window. The window will tell you how many times that word appears in the article or website, and will highlight the word.
Here's how we used it this week at our house. Gracen was looking for information on the Tigua indians. She used www.sweetsearch.com/sweetsites to find her information. Her search turned up this site: Tiguas Using CTRL-F, she found the word Tigua used 53 times in this article. Telling her that this was an article worth reading.
Try it yourself, then show your students.
High School Students Can Change the World
Watching Jack's TED talk made me think about our students -- the one's who sit in our classes every single day. Think back to one of the books I recommended last year, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Rebecca Skloot first heard the name Henrietta Lacks in a science class. The teacher, in the midst of a lecture, mentioned the woman for whom the HeLa cells were named. For Skloot, that's all it took to plant a seed that would grow for years. Henrietta Lacks was the first thing Skloot searched for the first time she sat down at a computer. That one mention stayed with Skloot for years until she was able to track down Henrietta's relatives and tell Henrietta's story herself.
So, just think about it. What are you inspiring your students to do?
Watchup iPad App
In class, you could assign students different news channels, and compare how the big events are covered differently based on the news outlet. Hear how the same story is being told around the world.
