Message from Nurse McCormick (2.22.22)
Good afternoon,
I just want to share a few highlights from nurse meeting (2.22.22) that will affect our continued effort in mitigating the spread of COVID in the school setting. The following information is based on the recent update to the Strong Schools NC Public Health Toolkit (K-12) released on February 10, 2022.
- Exclusion from school for positive COVID cases remains a requirement.
- Individual contact tracing and exclusion from school after an identified exposure is no longer recommended statewide in K-12 schools as of February 21, 2022. This applies to household exposures as well. Our LEA has decided not to provide any notification of a possible exposure at this time to individuals or groups. Please reference pg 15. School nurses will however continue to monitor COVID infections, possible contacts and clusters.
- The local health department, along with our LEA, have NOT clarified at this time whether an asymptomatic student or staff member absence will be excused or unexcused if it is opted to complete a 5 day quarantine following exposure to a known COVID case. It will however, no longer be the responsibility of the school nurse to remove individuals who are a close contact of a COVID case unless the individual is symptomatic as we are no longer recommended to contact trace. Please reference pg. 15
- The current guideline for Handling Possible, Suspected, Presumptive, or Confirmed Positive Cases of COVID indicates that a person who has completed a 5 day quarantine due to a COVID positive diagnosis or who is presumed positive for COVID (have COVID-like symptoms but not confirm by test) MUST CONTINUE to wear a mask for 10 days after the first day of symptoms. So, students or staff should wear a mask regardless of mask-option for an additional 5 days after quarantine. Anyone found not following this guideline will be referred to the school's administration.
- REMINDER: Mask wearing remains a requirement on all school and activity buses.
- Onsite testing for COVID for all staff and students with symptoms remains open at this time.
If you have any questions or concerns about any of this information, please contact me or refer to the toolkit at https://covid19.ncdhhs.gov/media/164/open.
Respectfully,
Nurse McCormick

-Reminder to notify myself and Nurse McCormick if you have tested positive for COVID-19.
-Testing will be held at HJ MacDonald Middle School and not Craven Early College. We do not have an on site dedicated school Nurse. Shannetta McCormick is our assigned school nurse at HJ MacDonald. We appreciate your patience as she helps two schools.
