The Battle of Beaumont Hamel

Did you know that the battle of Beaumont Hamel was thought to be a glorious victory? But one day, people learned the terrible truth: that hundreds of young men were killed and many more were wounded. The battle began on July 1st, 1916,and Newfoundland troops were an important part of the fighting. The battle was intended to destroy a major enemy strong point and to gain ground. However, the soldiers found themselves fighting for their lives. No battle was more devastating or as important to the Newfoundland regiment as The Battle of Beaumont-Hamel.
With the loss of so many young men and leaders, there was a big impact on Newfoundland's economic and cultural development for many years later. Even today, people of Newfoundland take time on July 1st every year to remember the great sacrifices of the soldiers.
