ISTE Standards for Students
Info and Ideas
1. Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
A fun tool that I have found that let's students show their understanding of a concept in a creative way is Thinglink.
2. Communication and Collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
Digital storytelling is a great way for students to communicate their ideas with the world. This site provides some great tools, starting points, and ideas.
3. Research and Information Fluency
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
I think an important part of this standard is teaching students how to properly cite information that they find and use from the internet. RefMe is a great site to help students properly cite material.
4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.
It is important to teach students the research process (planning, organizing, plagarism, etc.) This site gives students modules they can work through that help teach them these skills and more.
5. Digital Citizenship
Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior.
There is really good online curriculum for teaching students digital citizenship. I recommend Digital Passport or Digital Compass from Common Sense Media.
6. Technology Operations and Concepts
Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.
Lego Mindstorms are a great way to teach kids about technology systems and operation.
