Weekly Update
What a great week we had! The boys and girls enjoyed having you visit. I am glad you were able to see them hard at work!
This week in reading, the students noted details about Polar bears through videos and PebbleGo. Students then used their notes to create a Wixie in order to inform others about their topic. Students were asked to include a background, a photograph and 4 key details. As a challenge, students were asked to also include a text feature.
In phonics, we continued working with digraphs. Last week students practiced reading and writing words with the sh and th sounds. This week we practiced reading and writing words with the ch, tch, wh and ph sounds. Students also worked with plural nouns. They learned to add -es to make a noun plural that ends in ch, tch, sh, x, z, or ss. We also talked about irregular plural nouns. Examples that we discussed are men, women, teeth, mice, children and people.
I have been very impressed with the level of care, responsibility and commitment to using the devices. We have used the laptops for reading nonfiction articles on PebbleGo, worked on Dreambox to increase math skills, created Wixie pages in response to social studies lessons and reading lessons and have used them for Listen to Reading time during our Daily 5 centers to model reading fluency.
As a teacher, I see the value in using the laptops throughout the day. We will research, learn, create, discover, play, practice, and explore. I also know the value of children interacting with one another, of talking, sharing, making eye contact, playing, exploring, reading to one another, holding pencils in their hands and drawing and writing. Therefore, I ensure you, there will always be a balance.

Camdyn is using TumbleBooks for her "read to self" time.
Quentin is using Wixie to show what he learned about Meerkats.
Math and Social Studies
In math, students continued to use the problem solving steps of visualize, retell, think and share in order to solve addition story problems.
In Social Studies, students identified examples of goods, services, producers and consumers.

A few reminders...
Mrs. Santoro emailed a sign up for a few snack items for Wednesday. Thank you in advance for your donations! In addition, I would like EACH student to bring in one apple, peeled and sliced. We will be making homemade applesauce.
Also, please ask your child if they need more dry erase markers. We use them daily and many of them are drying out and need to be replaced.
Thanks!!
