Swedish Immigration Museum

Monday, Feb. 1st, 9am-2:30pm

Please make sure children are on time to school Monday, we will take attendance and leave at 9:05, buses leave Joan Martin at 9:15 am. Students must have sack lunch, drink and a snack for the day. Please make sure your child does not bring ANY electronic devices including a cell phone or money.

This a a wonderful trip into the city and a great way to round out our month long unit on immigration. I will be sure to take lots of pictures of the kids and keep you updated through our class FB page & Dojo throughout the day.

Weekly Academic Standards

Social Studies - Standard 1. 3.1.9 Define Immigration and explain how immigrants enriches community. 3.1.6 Use a variety of resources to gather information about your regions communities; identify factors that make the region unique, including cultural diversity, industry, the arts and architecture.

Reading: 3.RN.2.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, using words such as first, next, finally, because, problem, solution. 3.RN.3.1 Apply knowledge of text features to locate information and gain meaning from text ( mod content-specific words and phrases in a nonfiction text relevant to a third grade topic or subject area. 3.RV.3.2 Determine the meanings of general academic and content-specific words and phrases in nonfiction text relevant to a third grade topic or subject area.

Writing: 3.W.4 Apply the writing process to generate a draft by developing, selecting and organizing ideas relevant to topic, purpose, and genre; revise to improve writing, using appropriate reference materials and edit writing for format and conventions.

3.W.2.1 Write Legibly, leaving space between letters in a word, words, in a sentence, and the edges of the paper.

Math: 3.M.3 Choose and use appropriate units and tools to estimate and measure length, weight, and temperature. Estimate and measure length to 1/4 inch, weight in pounds, and temperature in degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit.

EDM Unit 3 - Perimeter and Area

Over the next 2 weeks we will learn and practice finding the Perimeter of various shapes.

Monday: No Homework

Tuesday: Homework - Measuring and calculating perimeter. .

Wednesday: Homework - More perimeter

Thursday & Friday: Homework- estimating and measuring Area

Social Studies Unit 3 Immigration

We will continue our 3 week unit on Immigration. Everyone will get a copy and will be reading Long Way to a New Land in class. We will follow a Swedish's family's journey to America. We will map and complete a companion packet in class as we read each section. Any portion of the packet that is not completed in class will be homework. Please make sure students have their packet everyday. We will have a test over this book Friday.


**Monday Feb. 1st our class will join Mrs. Osika's class for a study trip to the Swedish Museum in Chicago, IL. ( permission slip goes home 1-11-16, see event below)

Writing Packet

Over the next several weeks we will focus on constructed response to literary and non-fiction text. At he beginning of each week the class will receive a reading and writing packet to complete over the course of the week - due each Friday.

Each packet will receive 3 grades : Reading multiple choice questions), Writing (organization), and Conventions (spelling/grammar).

Please refer to the writing rubric that was attached to your child's practice response last week(1/18). I will be using the same rubric to grade their writing/conventions each week.
