what is poverty?

According to www.dictionary.com Poverty: the state of being extremely poor, but poverty is more than that. Poverty is a beautiful story that shows ordinary people what life is like on the other side of the tracks. Poverty is more than raggedy cloths and no food it show what people are really made of, it shows what life is really like but in the most extreme way.

American Poverty

Americans living above the poverty rate are still at risk of being homeless. This means that people that earn above a specific amount are not eligible for government assistance, or things like food stamps. They have jobs but still have a hard time taking care of everything. They sometimes don’t make enough to cover all the bills and eat too.

Approximately 15.1% of our population. That’s about 46.7 million people in America that are living without homes, food, or health care. Poverty is at its lowest in America, but there are ways to reduce that to zero. This is the goal, to have no child or adult be without food or a home to live in.

People have many reasons why they are in poverty and it’s not because they are lazy, like some people think.

Gender Poverty

There may be more more women than men in poverty according to the gender poverty gap since 2010 male poverty has significantly declined… but women’s poverty level has stayed steady, leading the growing gender poverty gap.

Government assistance

. "The Food Stamp Program, the largest of the federal food-assistance programs, began as a pilot program in 1961. Congress established it as a permanent program through the Food Stamp Act of 1964” (Fisher) Food stamps were created to help family’s with low income get food and it’s done just that. The food stamp program according to the USDA about 46.5 million people in poverty use food stamp. That’s almost the entire population of people in poverty.

The government helps people with funds by creating Social Security Program “Social Security is the foundation of economic security for millions of Americans—retirees, disabled persons, and families of retired, disabled or deceased workers. About 163 million Americans pay Social Security taxes and 59 million collect monthly benefits. About one family in four receives income from Social Security.” (What is social security?). But is social security really enough.

Ways To Help

There are many ways to help with the homeless you could donate to a local charities. For example the Global Citizen’s Project which helps people that are in extreme poverty all over the globe, “Becoming a Global Citizen is the first step in creating change. Global Citizen has one of the loudest voices in the room when fighting for important issues, and we’re having real impact on the decisions that our leaders make” (“global citizen’s”). Another way to give back is to take it upon yourself to help the community. This could impact someone’s life forever. So the next time you see a man on the street give him some change he may need it more than you do.
