Celebrating Yeats 150 in Seoul

13th June 2015 is the 150th birth anniversary of one of Ireland's most famous writers, W.B. Yeats. The occasion will be marked in Korea with activity all day and night, in collaboration with Dongguk University and Yeats scholar Professor Youngmin Kim.

Celebrating Yeats 150 in Seoul - Conference

During the day (10.00-19.00) , an exceptional line up of Irish and Korean scholars will discuss the great man's work and influence. Irish professors Claire Connolly from UCC, and Adrian Paterson from NUI Galway, are featured speakers. A brochure will be forwarded with further details. All lovers of Irish culture are encouraged to come along - even if you can't make the conference, you are very welcome to join us for the evening performances!

Celebrating Yeats 150 in Seoul - Evening festivities (19.00)

There will be music and dance provided by Ceoltoiri Seoul Irish music group. Renowned Irish author Christine Dwyer Hickey ( will read and discuss her work, and as a nod to Yeats's contemporary, there will be short readings from James Joyce's Ulysses. Yeats's birthday celebrations will continue afterwards at a nearby bar.

Happy Valley Information Panel - ceremonial unveiling

Happy Valley is the battlefield most emblematic of the sacrifices of those of Irish birth and heritage during the Korean War. An information panel has been erected at the site to mark it and to provide information to local residents and those passing through on the significance of the battle.

The Embassy of Ireland in coordination with the Irish Association of Korea, Ministry for Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Yangju City Council, and Embassy of the United Kingdom, will hold an unveiling ceremony at the site on 26 June at 3pm. World University Games - Team Ireland needs you!

The 2015 World University Games will take place in Gwangju from July 2 - 14. Ireland will have high performance competitors in athletics, swimming, golf, archery, judo, and mens and womens football. Team Ireland would welcome support at the various events. For further information, visit

Korean GAA

There are a number of important GAA events coming up:

  • The second round of the Korean League, hosted by Daegu Na Fianna, will take place in Daegu on the weekend of the 30 May.
  • Seoul Gaels, with some Laochra Busan particpants, are also gearing up for the All China Games, which will be held in Hong Kong on 20 June.
  • The third round of the Korean League will then be hosted by the Seoul Gaels on 11 July in Namyangju.

Sunday Sessions

The Sunday sessions organised by the Irish Association of Korea continue every Sunday in the Wolfhound, Itaewon from 4pm to 8pm. All musicians and singers are welcome to perform, and all are encouraged to come along and enjoy the session.

Changes in Ireland House
