Fifth Grade Newsletter
March 5, 2017
Dear Parents:
Thanks to all of you who came to conferences last week! If you weren't able to make it, report cards will be mailed. We'd like to welcome Mrs. Meyer back to school and thank Mr. Haan for serving as principal.
Challenge Mountain
Students who work with Mrs. Powell, Mrs. Noble, and Mrs. Elowsky will be going to Challenge Mountain on Friday March 10. This is rescheduled from our original date that was "snowed" out. If you turned in a permission waiver in February, your student is all set to go; if you did not, we will be sending home a waiver for you to sign. Please be in touch with one of us if you have any questions. Thank you.
Reading
As we begin the final trimester we will be starting a class novel, Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen. The students will be reading it in class as I don't have enough copies for everyone to have their own. We will also resume our vocabulary and word study this week, so sentences should be coming home on Wednesday if they do not get finished in class. The quiz will be Friday. Just a reminder that I will no longer be accepting late reading reflection logs (RRL). They are due on Fridays and unless the students are absent, they will be held to that deadline. If there isn't time in class to complete a reading log, I adjust the points accordingly.
Writing
Because of the snow day, students weren't able to share their ABC books last week. We will share them during the scheduled sharing time in class each day, giving all students an opportunity to showcase their work. We will work on the Kiwanis essays on a local charity of choice in class this week, but students are welcome to work on them at home as well. Essays are due March 23.
Math
Last week, students took the Chapter 5 test. They also spent one day learning how to model fraction addition with unlike denominators. Students have one assignment due on Monday: page 349 (1-11).
This week, students will continue to add fractions with unlike denominators. They will also work on subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Towards the end of the week, they will work with estimating, and practice creating fractions with common denominators by making equivalent fractions.
Social Studies
We will continue our study of the thirteen colonies this week.
Science
We will continue our study of matter. This week we will focus on molecules and compounds. We will also have a guest speaker Tuesday. Ms. Leach of Raven Hill Discovery Center will lead the students through an investigation.

Snow Fun Day 2017
March is Reading Month
Our annual March Into Reading celebration has begun! This year's theme is baseball and softball. We will be celebrating with the Traverse City Beach Bums! The organization has challenged students to read for prizes: five books or 500 pages will earn a student a child's ticket to a game, ten books or 1,000 pages, a signed mascot poster, etc. Charts for keeping track will arrive from the team soon. Other events include Tiger Tuesdays, Baseball Cap Fridays, and an assembly. Students are encouraged to wear blue and orange on Tuesdays through the month and baseball caps on Fridays. March 9 there will be an assembly with Beach Bum mascot Suntan! On Thursday, March 23 it is Beach Bum day. Students can wear T-shirts, shorts, and sandals on the last day before spring break.
