The Holiday's Origin

Shavuot is a Jewish holiday that takes place on the date of Sivan 6 on the Jewish religious calendar. It is believed that, on this date, the ten commandments were given to Moses at Mt. Sinai, in 2015 Shavuot will begin on May 23 at 8:06 PM, and end on May 25 at 8:08 PM.

Rituals and Practices

During Shavuot it is traditional to stay up all night studying the Torah during the first night as well as going to Synagogue during the first day for a reading of the ten commandments and to read the book of ruth. During the second day of Shavuot the Yizkor memorial service begins, readings and prayers are read and then paragraphs are read silently by individuals remembering the deceased. Also during Shavuot people eat dairy foods such as cheese and milk.
