Peaceful Play
Conflict resolution strategies for recess
Conflict Resolution
Many students lack basic skills necessary for solving and resolving daily conflicts with other students, adults, family members, authority figures, etc. Teaching conflict resolution skills enables and empowers to solve their problems. It improves student self-confidence and reduces tattling, bickering, & disruptions. These lessons can be done with individual students, small groups, or with the whole class. They should be taught, modeled, practiced, and revisited on a regular basis and should include lots of role playing. As the adult, model proper conflict resolution skills with every opportunity you get and point out to students how you used the skills.
Organized Recess - offer some structured choices
New research shows positive impact of organized recess games and activities. Students must be taught what is expected of them at recess and what types of play behaviors are appropriate. Group games increase participation, inclusion, good sportsmanship, and positive peer interactions. Active supervision is crucial during recess.
