What's up in First Grade?
Hello and Welcome back!
Since coming back since Christmas break, we are happy to report that we have seen a huge growth in student's reading, writing and math! We are on a great streak and we are so thankful and lucky to have such wonderful and supportive parents.
As we move into winter, we are getting ready for some new units and a new potential field trip in late February or early March, most likely to the zoo to culminate our animal reports unit which we will start in the next week or two. We are also starting to get ready for the next report card and conferences. Conferences will be all day on Friday the 12th. These conferences will only be parent or teacher requested, so we will not be meeting with everyone at that time. However, you are always welcomed to set up a time to see either of us or both of us before or after school.
*Please turn in your blue intent to return forms by Friday, January 22nd. They should have come home in your weekly folders. If you need an extra one, we have some in our room.
*The State of the School Meeting for Parents will be on Wednesday January 20th.
*The next First Grade hosted Mass will be on Thursday, January 21st. Since next week is a short week, we will pass out job assignments by Friday and hope to see as many parents and friendly faces as possible!
*There will be NO school on Monday January 18th in remembrance for Martin Luther King Jr.
*Catholic Schools Week will be Feb 1st-5th. The spirit days will be
Monday- Pajama Day Tuesday- Sports Day Wednesday Flip-flop day (students dress like teachers) Thursday Grandparents day and Friday Color wars (our color is orange)
There will also be a spirit assembly sometime that week.
Please as always let us know if you have any questions or concerns!
Math- We are also starting to introducing 2D and 3D shapes including- 2D shapes: triangles, squares, rectangles, ovals, rhombuses (diamonds), hexagons, pentagons. 3D- cones, pyramids, spheres, cylinder, cubes. We are continuing to work on addition and subtraction within 10 and addition and subtraction word problems.
Reading- In english we are introducing silent e and long vowel sounds with words such as cane, vine, mule and hope. Practicing recognizing these words in your child's reading will help a lot. We also continue to practice sight words and syllables in both spanish and english. We are also introducing the concept of verbs, adjectives and nouns in both spanish and English.
Religion- We have begun to talk about the holy trinity and the three parts of God- the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are also going through the early life of Jesus and His baptism.
Writing- We are making great progress on sounding out our own words. Having students structure sentences on their own in their own wording is also great practice. The students are going over in both classes to self check their work for capitols, punctuation, and spaces and you can encourage them to do this in their own writing at home.
