What is The Sun?

  • The Sun is a giant star in the middle of our Solar System.
  • It is a giant ball of gas and is orange.
  • Although The Sun is the biggest thing in our Solar System, it is only a medium sized star compared to all the other stars in the Milky Way.

How Big and How Hot is The Sun?

  • The Sun's surface is around 5,778 K (K used in Kelvin temperature)
  • If you filled The Sun with planets the size of the Earth, you would need 1.3 million Earths.

What Are The Sun's Characteristics?

  • The Sun is made up of 70% hydrogen, 28% helium, and the other 2% is made up of assorted metals such as iron and nickel
  • Rotation: The Sun is made up of hot gas, the surface of the equator rotates once every 25.4 days and the rotation is somewhere around 36 days.
  • Surface Effects: The surface of he photosphere. Some of the areas on the Sun's surface are more hot than the normal 5000 C temperature and some are not as hot.
  • Radiation: The energy that comes from the fusion reactions near the center of the Sun or the Sun's core is in the form of VERY HIGH FREQUENCY electromagnetic waves called gamma rays.
