JCISD LEARNING SERVICES UPDATE

Day of Discovery
Our JCISD Day of Discovery, held on October 19th, was a great success! We want to thank the more than 900 participants from prekindergarten to beyond 12th grade. Your dedication to learning and the insight that you offered helped to make our Day of Discovery even better. Throughout the day, 35 presentations and 34 presenters provided professional learning to over 25 school districts and community partners. If there were sessions that you missed and would like to see, please go to our webpage (link below) to see the recordings of the sessions. We received phenomenal feedback and some quality suggestions from our participants, as well as many requests to hold an event like this again.
So mark your calendars for Monday, March 8th, 2021! On this day, we will be holding another Day of Discovery, which will offer more sessions, more presenters, and even more learning opportunities. We are excited to provide this opportunity to the educators of Jackson County, and cannot wait to work with you again!
Unpredictable Lesson Planning for Unpredictable Times
- What students can do if they are learning online.
- What students can do if they are learning at school.
- What students can do no matter how they are learning.
- Ideas to keep in mind if your circumstances keep changing.
About SEMIS
The Great Lake Stewardship Initiative (GLSI) was formed in 2007 to support place-based education throughout Michigan, with a focus on experiential learning opportunities based in regional hub organizations. The Jackson County ISD is proud to partner with the Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition (SEMIS) to further their vision.
According to the GLSI website, “The Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (GLSI) creates a culture of stewardship by providing young people with relevant knowledge and hands-on experiences that build excitement for learning and instill a commitment to improving local communities. We serve a critical social need at a time when too many young people are feeling disengaged from school, ineffectual in their community, and isolated from the outdoors. With the help of participating educators, civic leaders, and community partners, the GLSI’s work:
- Helps young people become effective environmental stewards
- Encourages schools and community organizations to work together for mutual benefit
- Constitutes a purposeful effort across Michigan to expand classrooms, strengthen communities, and serve as a beacon for positive change”

Comprehensive Literacy Framework
Using the Literacy Essentials with every child, in every classroom, every day will help improve literacy among our youngest learners. The research-supported instructional practices for Grades K-3 and Grades 4-5 foster literacy development for Michigan K-5 students. But what specifically do these practices look like in the classroom? Refer to the JCISD Comprehensive Literacy Framework for Grades K-3 and Grades 4-5 for further guidance to ensure effective, equitable literacy instruction for ALL students.

One GSRP Parent's Perspective on Distance Learning...
"So the last couple days I’ve had the chance to use the virtual learning with my daughter. And I can say I love it. She is able to do the same thing at home, as what she would be doing in class, while also adding in a little bit of our own learning. Unfortunately, we’ve had no luck with the zoom meetings, but despite that thanks to the Teaching Strategies we’ve been able to show what she’s doing, and accomplishing and getting feed back. I’m truly thankful for the virtual learning so she doesn’t really have to miss school, even though she’s not in class. Overall I absolutely love the virtual learning option when unable to be in class."
During a time when many of our students have been pulled from the classroom back to home for learning, we really appreciate this parent sharing her experience.
