Principal's Update:

Hello Vista Academy Families,

Thanks to everyone for their outstanding support of Booktoberfest. It has been absolutely wonderful seeing all of our students reading, reading, reading!

Attendance counts! With the challenges of the past year and half it is so important that our students are in school every single day. Please ensure that if your child is healthy they are not missing school due to optional vacations or because they don’t feel like coming to school. Every day matters and every day missed takes additional work for your child to catch up. We do understand when students are sick or in quarantine, but please make sure if your child is healthy, they are on time and in school.

SASEA Project Notification:

Our collaboration with UCSD’s SASEA Project has detected COVID-19 in our wastewater in a sample collected on October 13. UCSD will be on our site this Monday, October 18 & Tuesday, October 19 to provide testing for students and staff members that have signed the consent form. Only students who have a completed consent form will be participating in the testing. Students will be tested during school hours. The type of test is PCR nasal. Please note that parents will not be present during testing.

Spooky Stories "Zoom-bie" Style:

Our very own Mr. DeLeon will continue on with his tradition of telling spooky stories over Zoom on two dates October 19 & 26 starting at 5:30 p.m. Zoom link can be found below.

UPDATE - Student Costumes (October 29):

Students may wear costumes if they choose on October 29, but everyone must still wear masks that cover their nose and mouth when inside. No facial painting or scary/gory costumes. We will have a costume parade on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 8:15AM. Please send your student to school in their costume and a change of clothes if their costume will be uncomfortable to wear all day. Our parade will be held outdoors and classes will be socially distanced. If you do not want your child to participate, please let your classroom teacher know. We will provide an alternate activity in the library. Due to the current health restrictions, parents will not be allowed on campus for this event.

Independent Study Contract:

The District recently sent an email containing information regarding Independent Study Contracts. Students who have a symptom and are sent home, can now receive attendance credit through an Independent Study Contract. It's important to note that students on independent study contracts will have to provide their teachers with completed work (packets or on Canvas depending on the teacher) once they return to school in order to receive attendance credit. Failure to provide work may result in attendance credit being rejected. The email contains the form which can be submitted online.

Healthy Food District Policy:

We would like to remind parents about our district wellness policy in regards to snacks and treats coming in for birthdays, class parties etc. If you would like to donate something to the class, we are requesting non food items or individual packaged items that are healthy snacks.

Health & Safety Important Information:

We all need to work together to keep all of our students safe. If you or your family is under quarantine orders through the county, please STAY HOME and do not come into a school office to advise your child is absent. We will return your call as soon as possible.

COVID-19 Decision Tree:

The COVID Decision Tree has been updated 10/7/21 and is here in ENGLISH, SPANISH. The update also includes the latest information regarding quarantine options for persons exposed to COVID-19.

We will continue to ensure that safety is a top priority at Vista Academy. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

COVID-19 Notification Process Update:

We will no longer be notifying the entire school with COVID notification letters and phone messages. Only classes with direct exposure or close contacts to a COVID positive will be notified. We will provide a weekly update on the number of new cases each week in this update in the health and safety section. For this past week we had 0 Covid cases impacting our campus this week and a positive wastewater sample on October 13 which will result in responsive testing tomorrow for students and staff who have opted into the SASEA project.

Please refer to Dr. Doyle’s latest community update and daily updates on districtwide COVID cases will be listed by school on the COVID dashboard.

Health Office Reminder:

Families, please keep us informed about the following:

  1. If you notice any symptoms, please keep your child at home. Notify the school immediately.

  2. If you have taken a test and it is positive, please inform the school immediately.

IB Update:

An additional component of our IB Self-study and IB Programme Evaluation has been a Programme Development Plan. We investigated this essential question: How do we support students' academic gains through Inquiry? Each grade level team, in addition to our Arts and Special Education teams made their own goals related to inquiry and we shared progress throughout the year. We learned that Vista Academy has many components of inquiry-based instruction in place; however, we still need to build capacity and deepen understanding of inquiry across grade levels, especially with new staff members.

Additional Information:

If you have any questions about our IB program, please reach out to our IB coordinator, Sharon Scott-Gonzalez at sharonscott-gonzalez@vistausd.org

Meet the Specialists!

Spanish Specialist: Diana Schoeppner

Diana started her teaching career as a bilingual classroom teacher for the Escondido Union School District in the mid 1990s. She spent several years at the elementary level, where the focus was teaching Spanish-speaking students in their primary language while gradually introducing English as a second language. Diana then took an extended leave to raise her family, always staying involved with her children's education as a parent volunteer. When Diana was ready to return to education, she began guest teaching for several districts in North County in grades K-8, including a long-term assignment at an International Baccalaureate school teaching Spanish. This experience helped Diana realize she longed to share her love of the Spanish language and encourage the importance of being bilingual. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies at San Diego State University and her BCLAD Multiple Subject Credential at Cal State San Marcos. Diana is a native Spanish-speaker and was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she lived until the age of five. She has been at Vista Academy since September of 2017.
