Summer Learning Resources from the TDS Team
Hello friends,
The end of this unique school year is approaching along with a range of emotions about saying, "Goodbye, for now." The TDS team remains committed to supporting you and your students as we celebrate the end of the school year and navigate a new look at summer break.
Many HSE families are experiencing similar mixed feelings, and quite a few have reached out to you in search of resources to support their child's learning throughout the summer months. As your principal has shared with you, each PreK - 6th grade teacher should plan to include a basic one-page document of Summer Learning Suggestions for Families within their eLearning next week. The TDS team is here to help!
We have gathered some examples of suggestions and resources for K-2, 3-4 and 5-6. You will find those attached to this email.
- Our examples are in no way comprehensive, and teams should feel free to upgrade our examples, use only portions, or not at all.
- High Ability teachers may want to look at the resources for the grade level above and provide a balance of grade-level and above grade level suggestions for families.
- Some additional resources are linked to the documents. If you include these documents, please do not link families to our OneDrive folder. Rather download the resource from OneDrive and attach to your eLearning documents.
Enjoy time together this week and next. It has been a year that we will never forget; a year full of learning, connections, and innovation. It is time to celebrate and ready for a summer of new opportunities.
Warmly,
The TDS Team 🙂

The View from 518: Where do we go from here?
Over the past couple of weeks, I've been watching how our education system has made a quick pivot in order to meet the needs of our students in a whole new way. I have been so impressed by all that teachers have done to create the best possible learning environment for students. But it's also got me wondering - what can we learn from this? How can we make the system better when we get back to "normal" (whatever that may be!). Check out my most recent post for a little more on my thoughts.

Safety Videos from Fishers Fire Department
Teachers, feel free to use these safety videos as you see fit! They are created by the Fishers Fire Department. They added some more videos to their shared drive which you can access below in the Handouts folder:
(https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1aYDIFI4NayBr9bBVsCdyOI8yCpx11627?usp=sharing). Teachers are free to use or edit these however works best for them!
- There are two different literacy activities to use with text-to-text comparisons...one is comparing 2 different versions of the same story (Three Pigs), and the other is comparing 3 different versions. There are two videos of me reading different versions of the story (links in the handouts, but videos are also on our YouTube channel , as well as links to others’ recordings/videos of The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by A. Wolf.
- There are some great handouts to help with reading comprehension and using text to answer questions. They come from the Smeckens Education...If you aren’t familiar with Smeckens, I highly recommend their resources and/or attending one of their workshops--when life returns to normal!

How to Talk with Children About COVID-19
*This message is being sent on behalf of Brooke Lawson, Mental Health and School Counseling Coordinator.
When things feel uncertain it’s normal to feel stressed, we want to make sure we have armed you with resources to support your students. Don’t be afraid to discuss COVID-19 with your students, but let them guide the conversation. It’s important to provide facts without promoting a high level of stress. Remind students that adults are working to address this concern, and give them actions they can take to protect themselves.
Keep Explanations Age Appropriate.
- Early elementary school children need brief, simple information that should balance COVID-19 facts with appropriate reassurances that their schools and homes are safe and the adults are there to help keep them healthy. Give simple examples of the steps people take every day to stop germs and stay healthy, such as washing hands. Use language such as “adults are working hard to keep you safe.”
- Upper elementary and intermediate school children will be more vocal in asking questions about whether they truly are safe and what will happen if COVID-19 comes to their school or community. They may need assistance separating reality from rumor and fantasy. Discuss efforts of school and community leaders to prevent germs from spreading.
- Junior high school and high school students are able to discuss the issue in a more in-depth (adult-like) fashion and can be referred directly to appropriate sources of COVID-19 facts. Provide honest, accurate, and factual information about the current status of COVID-19. Having such knowledge can help them feel a sense of control.
Other things to keep in mind:
- Remain calm and reassuring.
o Children will react to and follow your verbal and nonverbal reactions.
- Make yourself available.
- It is important that they know they have someone who will listen to them.
- Avoid excessive blaming.
- It is important to avoid stereotyping any one group of people as responsible for the virus.
- Be honest and accurate.
- In the absence of factual information, children often imagine situations far worse than reality.
- Focus on what you’re doing to stay safe.
- An important way to reassure kids is to emphasize the safety precautions that you are taking.
