PreK-3 and K-5 Specials THE POWER OF CHANT: BUILDING ORAL FLUENCY AND READING COMPREHENSION Workshop Kennedy Center/Whiting Partnership

Tuesday, April 10th, 8-11am

404 West Ellen Street

Fenton, MI

Leader: Cynthia Elek (Kennedy Center Teaching Artist sponsored by The Whiting/FAPS Partnership)

For teachers available as a 3-hour reading aloud with expression and confidence relies on students’ abilities to comprehend a text and develop their oral skills. Through the creation and presentation of chants—rhythmic text—students can extend their understanding of literature and increase fluency in their oral delivery.

In this workshop, teachers learn how to build on an author’s text to develop chants, create chants of their own, and guide students in the use of simple movements (drumming, clapping) to enhance text delivery. Participants will enjoy this low-risk, collaborative learning experience that has great benefits for student learning.

If teachers are not involved with testing, MERT, or have not been assigned/chosen any other session during this professional development they may use it to work with grade or subject matter department members to realign scope and sequence, units and or lessons from changing instructional delivery time. Take a look at the Smore the Dept of Teaching and Learning created for secondary folks for helpful resources and tips to do this. Also, make sure you are documenting your work for future use in the Department of Teaching and Learning as we'll be working on getting all courses/grade levels mapped in the upcoming years.
