Yuri Gagarin

Yuri Gagarin was a Russian cosmonaut in the early sixties who was the first man to be launched into to space and safely return to earth during the the Space race between the U.S.S.R. and the United States.

Life Story

Yuri Gagarin was born on March 9, 1934 250 miles out side of Moscow, Russia on a collective farm. His father Alexey Gagarin was a carpenter. Yuri later went to a local school for six years and then went to different technical schools.

After Gagarin's yearly life he joined the Russian air force in 1955. Later, he graduated with honors from the soviet air force academy. Then, he was selected for cosmonaut training and soon after was selected for the first group of cosmonauts to be trained. On April 12, 1961 Gagarin was the first man to voyage into outer space and orbit the earth. The flight lasted 108 minutes and at it's highest point above earth Gagarin was 327km above earth.

After his first mission in to space Gagarin spent most of the remainder of his life training for his second mission in to space. Unfortunately, on March 27, 1968 while training for his second mission in to space Gagarin crashed the MiG-15 soviet fighter jet he was piloting and died.
