DEY FOCUS
October 3, 2016
Fall into OCTOBER!
First of all, a major thank you to Erika Workman and the PTA committee volunteers that helped make the 60th anniversary celebration possible. People are still talking about it and the event will live on as a memory for many. The best part was seeing former teachers from the 60s and 70s connect with students. Channel 3 (WTKR) paid us a visit, but it appears we were pre-empted. Either way, it was a wonderful day. Now, we can cruise into the future of John B. Dey with continued excellence!
This month is full of fun and the biggest thing coming up is the FALL FESTIVAL! This fabulous day promises to be filled with great fun and activities. The PTA has limited fund-raisers and the FALL FESTIVAL is a big fundraiser for us! Thanks in advance to all who help get it together and for everyone who attends! Mark Your Calendars: 11-2 on Saturday, OCT. 15th!
Keep in mind, that next Monday, Oct. 10, there is NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS as it is a staff development day. In addition, Monday, Oct. 24th, is now a full day for students to make up for the inclement weather.
Thanks for all you do to partner with us in your child's education. Together, we make wonderful things happen for your children!
Sincerely,
Beth Bianchi

PTA PRESIDENT MESSAGE
Dear John B. Dey Families,
It is the start of a new school year at John B. Dey Elementary and this year’s theme is “structuring the future through innovation.” John B. Dey has two main fundraisers: Fall Festival and Seagull Circle.
Your participation in Seagull Circle and the Fall Festival last year allowed us to provide:
- 55 Google chrome books and 2 carts
- $100 toward each classroom for supplies
- 4 scholarships to JBD students
- $650 to each grade level towards STEAM activities and special programs
These fundraisers replace the standard fundraisers like wrapping paper, candy, candle and coupon book sales. So, let’s try to do it again! We need every family to participate!
Fall Festival is Saturday, October 15th from 11a.m.-2 p.m. This “fun”draiser depends on wristband sales! They are $20 and give your student unlimited turns on all the bouncehouses, inflatables, petting zoo, games, crafts and more!
Wristband order forms are due this Friday, Oct. 7th! Order forms are available at: http://www.jbdpta.com/uploads/1/5/1/4/15140376/2016_fall_festival_flyer_order_form-_pdf.pdf
Sponsor the Seagull Circle! Sponsorships begin at $25 and your family’s name (or business) will be on the banner in the foyer of the school recognizing your sponsorship. This is a direct donation to the JBD PTA and has maximum impact!
Sponsorship forms are available here: http://www.jbdpta.com/uploads/1/5/1/4/15140376/seagull_circle_donation_form.pdf

MAKEUP PLAN ANNOUNCED FOR SCHOOL DAYS LOST DUE TO FLOODING
Instructional time missed because of widespread flooding last week will be made up Monday, Oct. 24 and Monday, Jan. 30; two days previously scheduled as Staff Days. This allows students to recoup learning time within the current semester.
This is a change from the previously published 2016-2017 school calendar, which had designated makeup days primarily in the second semester. The calendar was designed taking into consideration that most school closures in Hampton Roads occur as the result of winter storms.
As a reminder, in cases of school closings due to inclement weather or emergency conditions, makeup days will be designated by the superintendent and may include available staff days or holidays. The 2016-2017 school calendar has been updated to reflect the changes in makeup days and is available on vbschools.com.

SUMMER READERS CELEBRATE!
On Friday, September 16th, the PTA treated all Summer Reading Club participants with popsicles. Over 175 students turned in their summer reading logs and were invited to the celebration. Dey’s reading specialists, Mrs. Logan and Mrs. Schliske, were on hand to congratulate the readers along with a group of PTA representatives. A great big thank you goes out to our students for participating and to their parents for encouraging reading throughout the summer months.

The "WHY" of TECHNOLOGY-Mark YOUR Calendars- PIN SESSION 1
Technology is here. Face it. Our kids are into it, and many of us parents and adults are as well, or we are fighting it to a degree. There are lots of questions surrounding the infusion and sometimes confusion involving technology in the hands of children and infiltrating schools. Come to an amazing presentation given by David French, Principal of Tallwood Elementary School. Mr. French has been a leader in the movement with Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
You may have questions like:
1. Is it too much?
2. Are we focusing on the right things?
3. Where are we all really going with this?
4. How do we achieve balance?
5. How young is too young for a child to have a device?
....and Many more.
