Blessings in a Backpack
We are so fortunate that Blessings in a Backpack, have agreed to take on Whittier Elementary as one the schools that they support here in Frederick. We appreciate their kindness, generosity, and support.
And now we need the help of our community again:
- If you are able to commit to a consistent weekly volunteer position on Friday mornings from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, starting February 23rd- we need you! This person will be responsible for coordinating volunteers and leading our Blessings in a Backpack program at WHES.
- We are looking for 3-4 volunteers to go to Monocacy Elementary on Friday mornings to fill food bags.
- If your company willing to partner with, donate to or support Blessings in a Backpack

BE THE CHANGE
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
Jump Rope for Heart is coming back to Whittier Elementary! Your student will become a Heart Hero by taking care of his/her own heart, spreading the message of the American Heart Association and raising funds for lifesaving research.
Have your student jump online at heart.org/jump to take one of our three health challenges, send emails and ask for donations. ANY STUDENT WHO GOES ONLINE AND TAKES THE CHALLENGE GETS A GLOW IN THE DARK WRISTBAND. ANY STUDENT WHO GETS A DONATION WILL BE RECOGNIZED AND RECEIVE A CARABINER.

Looking for Volunteer Members- We have a few more activities that are fast approaching. Our Spring Book Fair, which is a B.O.G.O Event. Buy one get one free. If you are interested in helping with the spring book fair, please reach out to Jen Milsovic @ craig_jennifera@yahoo.com She is working to get our Book fair team together for training!
FCPS Magnet Program Information
The Magnet Program is designed for academically gifted students in Grades 3 – 5 with superior performance in both language arts and mathematics. Nomination booklets are now available and may be obtained from the school office, the FCPS Office of Advanced Academics or online at http://www.fcps.org/advacademics. The Office of Advanced Academics is now accepting nominations of present second through fourth grade students for possible placement in the magnet program for the 2018 - 2019 school year.
Students may be nominated for the magnet program by school staff, parents or jointly. Parents and teachers are encouraged to review information, including some characteristics of gifted students that is posted at http://www.fcps.org/advacademics. Teacher nominations, parent nominations and a completed Parent/Guardian Rating Form are due in the school office by March 1, 2018, so that tests can be administered and information required to complete the nomination packet may be gathered by school staff.
