AMCMS Principal's Office
What's Going on in the Principal's Office?!
My Challenge to You
Take about 12 minutes to watch the video above. Meet David Kelley. He is the founder of IDEO which is a innovation and design company that strives to help make other businesses and products better through innovation and creativity. But it is not just their innovation and creativity but their ability to help others tap into their own innovation and creativity.
Here are some of the different thoughts I had while watching his talk:
1. The fear of judgement is real. We are all afraid of judgement, it is a natural human feeling and emotion. Creative and innovative people are no less afraid of judgement, its that they have learned creativity and innovation is a process.... it does not just happen. The same could be said for our classrooms. Our students are afraid of judgement of their work by peers and teachers. We know that learning is a process and students are not likely to demonstrate mastery on their first attempt.
2. The idea of guided mastery goes hand in glove with creativity and innovation being a process. We must create a series of small successes for our students, especially our most struggling students. With the creation of small successes fear will turn into familiarity and our students will begin to see themselves as successful.
3. Sometimes we have to change our approach or change the experience for our learners in order to achieve the desired outcome just as Doug Dietz did with the MRI experience for children. He did not change the scan itself, he did not change the process, he did not change the expectations. He did change the environment and he created an experience that children wanted to have again. How can you do this with your teaching? How can to you this with you classroom?
You all have innovation and creativity inside of you. I heard that -- "Not Me!" -- is what most of you thought. You just have to be willing to try something different, experience small successes, and realize that it is a process and not an event. I am very willing and happy to sit and talk with anyone about how you can tap into your creativity in teaching.
Don't wait for a moment of crisis to make a change. If you wait it will likely be too late for your students.
Think. Achieve. Succeed.
Jeff
