Point of view is our skill for two weeks. We played Point of View Showdown, made our anchor chart, made notes and practiced.
Our class novel fits perfectly with point of view. Hound Dog True is a novel that allows the reader to really see inside the mind of the main character, Maddie. The reader discovers what Maddie is thinking and at times it's a little awkward, but insightful.
Excerpt from Goodreads:
Do not let a mop sit overnight in water. Fix things before they get too big for fixing. Custodial wisdom: Mattie Breen writes it all down. She has just one week to convince Uncle Potluck to take her on as his custodial apprentice at Mitchell P. Anderson Elementary School. One week until school starts and she has to be the new girl again. But if she can be Uncle Potluck’s apprentice, she’ll have important work to do during lunch and recess. Work that will keep her safely away from the other fifth graders. But when her custodial wisdom goes all wrong, Mattie’s plan comes crashing down. And only then does she begin to see how one small, brave act can lead to a friend who is hound dog true.
Science
We are studying solutions, mixtures, compounds, and molecules. Students are taking notes and learning some basic chemistry. Chapter 1 test will be late next week. Students can study in Quizlet.
Social Studies
Leading up to the American Revolution, the colonist experienced the French and Indian War, Sugar Act, and Stamp Act. This week we watch video clips, completed a write role play and took a closer look at these events.
Writing
Compare and contrast is our writing skill. This week we learned how to compare and contrast with a double T Chart and not the typical Venn Diagram. We discovered the importance of using commonalities (subtopics) to help us stay organized with our thoughts.
